You might remember the former Empire actor claimed he was attacked in 2019 in the middle of Chicago, over his race and sexuality. He even seemed to blame Trump supporters for the crime. It quickly came out that he had staged the entire event—and was taken to court for it.

He was found guilty of five counts of felony disorderly conduct for filing a false police report. The judge was absolutely brutal when he gave the man his sentence. She called him a “charlatan” and said his “name has become an adverb for ‘lying.’” She ordered he serve a jail time of 150 days as well as pay hefty fines. Such a wild comment shows the depths of the man’s arrogance, assuming someone would try to assassinate him in prison.

Yet Smollett is not so important to attract the attention of powerful forces that would seek his death. He is a hoaxer who exploited racial tensions for a few minutes in the limelight.
