A routine checkout turned deadly
Police say 44-year-old Alexis Hill was working as a Dollar General manager in Columbus, Georgia, on June 23 when a customer came to the counter to buy a pair of hamburger buns. According to the report, the man later identified as 33-year-old Jerome Willis handed Hill two crumpled $1 bills, and while she straightened the money, he stepped aside, pulled a handgun, and shot her. Hill was pronounced dead at the scene about 10:45 a.m. It is hard to imagine a more senseless act. A woman doing her job, helping a customer buy a cheap item, was killed in an instant over what should have been a routine store transaction.
The suspect fled, then met police the hard way
After the shooting, Willis ran from the scene and stayed on the loose for about three hours. Police later found him, but he refused to cooperate and things turned violent again. Authorities say officers gave verbal commands, then released a K-9 named Havoc when Willis would not comply. At that point, Willis reportedly pulled out another gun and fired at the dog and the officers. Police returned fire and killed him. A Columbus Police Department officer was treated at a hospital and later released. Havoc was taken to a veterinary hospital, then airlifted to an emergency facility for more care after surgery. The good news is the dog is recovering, because brave police dogs do not sign up for this nonsense either.
A family is left with the loss
Hill leaves behind three children and two grandchildren, and her brother, Johnathan Hill, said the family cannot replace her. That is the part that matters most. Behind every headline like this is a real family trying to get through the day after losing someone they love. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the officer-involved shooting, while the community is left with a heartbreaking reminder that violence can explode in the most ordinary places, even a store checkout line where nobody should ever have to fear for their life.
