Speaker Mike Johnson scored a commanding victory on Tuesday. He overcame a rebellion from his own party. This rebellion had nothing to do with socialism. It was about a government funding plan. House conservatives threatened to tank the vote. They wanted to fix a continuing resolution. They felt it failed the American people.

The real fireworks happened in the Rules Committee. Rep. Joe Neguse and Rep. Bryan Steil clashed. Neguse tried to trap Steil with a hypothetical. He asked if a 20% stake in Kroger was socialism. Steil replied he would want to see the details. Neguse yelled at him for the answer.
Neguse remarked that government ownership of grocery stores constitutes socialism, while Steil noted that certain individuals on the other side of the aisle desire government-run grocery stores. According to Fox News Politics, this exchange defined the hearing.
Rep. Jim McGovern called the bill nonsense. He contended that this action barely improved the lives of Americans. He inquired whether the focus should be on increasing gas costs or grocery prices. The Democrats focused on prices. The Republicans focused on the system itself.
The rebellion against the leadership was serious. Rep. Chip Roy wrote on X opposing the continuing resolution, stating it failed to provide common-sense policies for the American people. He felt the Senate did violence to the bill. Rep. Keith Self told Fox News Digital that the Senate did violence to their bill.
Republicans added a hemp ban delay and cut control over grants. This angered the House Freedom Caucus. Chair Andy Harris said he would vote against the rule. The rebels did not hate the anti-socialism bill. They hated how leaders handled the funding plan. They wanted to stop government overreach in all forms. The vote count showed a split in the party. But the final vote still moved the resolution forward.
