Dr. Wladimir Lorentz refused to answer a single question from Congress on Tuesday. He appeared before the House Oversight Committee under a subpoena issued by Chairman James Comer. The hearing focused on birth tourism agencies that help foreign nationals obtain U.S. citizenship for their children. Lorentz is the founder and chief medical officer of the agency known as “Have My Baby in Miami”.
He told Rep. Brandon Gill that he would plead the Fifth to all inquiries. Lorentz stated he did so to avoid self-incrimination during a pending federal investigation. “On the advice of counsel, I will respectfully decline to answer any questions touching the subject matter of a pending federal investigation on the grounds that a truthful answer may tend to incriminate me”.
According to RedState, Lorentz invoked his constitutional right eleven times during the session. The hearing was titled “Protecting American Citizenship: Confronting Birth Tourism”. Lorentz made it clear that his silence was not an admission of guilt. “Nothing in my appearance here today and nothing in my declining to answer questions should be understood as a concession on the merits of the ongoing investigation”.

Chairman Gill asked specific questions about the company’s clients and operations. He wanted to know if the business helped children of Chinese Communist Party members become citizens. Gill inquired whether the enterprise aids children belonging to Chinese Communist Party members in securing U.S. citizenship.. Lorentz declined to answer this question as well, citing the Fifth Amendment again. He also declined to disclose the number of foreign nationals who utilized the service.
Questions also covered whether the agency assisted foreign criminal organizations. According to the Daily Wire, Lorentz cited the Fifth Amendment for every substantive inquiry posed by the task force. Gill confronted Lorentz with the company’s former website, which advertised services to international clients. The website claimed the company had facilitated more than 2,000 deliveries.
Lorentz initially refused to appear voluntarily before the committee. Chairman James Comer responded by subpoenaing Lorentz on August 26 for this Tuesday’s hearing. The testimony lasted only a few minutes. Lorentz informed Gill that he would invoke the Fifth for all hearing questions to avoid self-incrimination during a federal investigation into his agency.

Gill announced the congressional probe into several birth tourism agencies back in May. He highlighted the specific case of the Miami-based operation. “Have My Baby in Miami — that’s the name of an actual company that is facilitating birth tourism into the United States, where foreigners come in on visas, have children, then leave so that their children can remain American citizens”.
The committee noted that an estimated 33,000 U.S.-born children receive citizenship annually this way. These children get birthright citizenship solely because their foreign parents arrived on temporary tourist visas. Gill stated that his task force is going after these companies.
The investigation continues as Lorentz maintains his right to remain silent. He responded to the CCP question by saying: “On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer the question on the grounds that a truthful answer may tend to incriminate me, and I invoke my rights under the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution”. The committee will likely seek more information from other sources as the probe moves forward.
