Yet Another Group Calls For The Censorship Of Joe Rogan

Over the past couple of months, there has been a bevy of retro musicians trying to take a stand against Joe Rogan by issuing threats to remove their music from the Spotify platform that Rogan uses. Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and many others have put forth public statements trying to denounce Rogan and his popular podcast that is hosted on the platform, making the claim that he is outright guilty of spreading massive “misinformation” by being willing to host people that hold all different kinds of opinions.

Recently, yet another podcast from the platform has joined in on the cancel chorus in their quest to silence Rogan by removing him from the platform. “Science Vs.” is another show available on the platform. The pair of hosts for the show have stated that the platform’s choice to keep supporting Rogan is “a slap in the face” and have stated their intent to restructure their show until the platform makes changes.

The “Science Vs.” podcast has won American Association for the Advancement of Science’s gold award for 2020 for their coverage of the pandemic. Despite this, however, The Joe Rogan Experience is by far the most popular show on the Spotify platform and is listed as the number one most listened-to podcast. All the while, Science Vs. has not even broached the top 100 in the most popular rankings for the platform.

“Until Spotify implements stronger methods to stop the spread of misinformation on the platform, we will no longer be making new Science Vs episodes, except those intended to counteract misinformation being spread on Spotify,” stated Wendy Zukerman, a podcast host, and Blythe Terrell, an editor, in an open letter targeting  Spotify chief executive Daniel Elk, which was shared on Twitter this past Monday evening.

“We know we have a critical role to play in supporting creator expression while balancing it with the safety of our users,” Elk stated in an open letter. “In that role, it is important to me that we don’t take on the position of being content censor while also making sure that there are rules in place and consequences for those who violate them.”

In response, Spotify promised to “publish long-standing platform rules” because of the criticism, and are planning to “add a content advisory to any podcast episode that includes a discussion about COVID-19.” Despite all of this, they did not give any indication that Rogan was to be reprimanded in any capacity.

Rogan issued his own response this past weekend by stating that he is committed to presenting both sides of any arguement in an attempt to bring ot light controversial topics rather than just leaning towards a single side.

Rogan stated, in part, “Do I get things wrong? Absolutely. I get things wrong, but I try to correct them. Whenever I get something wrong. I try to correct it because I’m interested in telling the truth. I’m interested in finding out what the truth is. And I’m interested in having interesting conversations with people that have differing opinions. I’m not interested in only talking to people that have one perspective.”
