But what happens when that covenant gets shattered? When the very people our government welcomed, vetted, and naturalized turn around and slaughter the Americans they swore to stand beside?
That question stopped being theoretical a long time ago. In recent months, a grim pattern has taken shape: naturalized American citizens committing savage acts of violence against the countrymen they pledged to join. Not isolated incidents. Not statistical noise. A pattern. And the latest case — out of suburban Georgia, no less — might be the most enraging yet.

Olaolukitan Adon Abel, naturalized under President Joe Biden’s administration years before he allegedly went on a killing spree, is just one such case. Abel, 26, was born in the United Kingdom and became a naturalized United States citizen in 2022. On Monday, Abel allegedly fatally shot two women, including Homeland Security employee Lauren Bullis, while she was walking her dog in DeKalb County, Georgia.
The alleged killer has a lengthy rap sheet that includes previous convictions for sexual battery, battery against a police officer, obstruction, assault with a deadly weapon, and vandalism, according to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
Let that rap sheet sink in for a moment. Sexual battery. Battery against a police officer. Assault with a deadly weapon. This wasn’t some mysterious figure who slipped through a hairline crack in the system. This was a man waving red flags with both hands — and Joe Biden’s administration handed him citizenship anyway, like it was a door prize at a county fair. Now Lauren Bullis, a Homeland Security employee out walking her dog, is dead. A second woman is dead. A homeless man was also shot. Every bit of this bloodshed was preventable.
A pattern too deadly to dismiss
Abel’s case didn’t materialize out of nowhere. It’s the latest entry in a growing catalog of carnage committed by people this country chose to let in. In March, a Senegalese immigrant sporting a “Property of Allah” sweatshirt opened fire outside an Austin, Texas, beer garden. Three dead. Fourteen wounded. Days later, Mohamed Bailor Jalloh — born in Sierra Leone, naturalized citizen, convicted of attempting to provide material support to ISIS, and somehow released early from prison — stormed Old Dominion University screaming “Allahu Akbar” and murdered a decorated service member. That very same day, a Lebanese immigrant whose brother happened to be a Hezbollah commander plowed a truck packed with fireworks and gasoline into a Michigan synagogue.
Three separate attacks. Three distinct backgrounds. One common thread: the American immigration system waved them all through.
And here’s the part that should make your blood boil. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services itself has acknowledged that “prior screening and vetting measures were wholly inadequate,” creating “significant national security and public safety risks.” Their words, not mine. A DHS Inspector General report found that biometric systems couldn’t access all data from federal partners. Between 2020 and 2024, the State Department issued a jaw-dropping twelve million nonimmigrant visas without bothering to conduct in-person interviews or even collect fingerprints.
The government didn’t fall asleep at the wheel. It abandoned the vehicle altogether.
Trump acts, Democrats object
President Trump, to his credit, has responded with the urgency this crisis demands. His administration launched an aggressive denaturalization campaign targeting those who obtained citizenship through fraud or while hiding criminal histories. USCIS has been directed to bring 100 to 200 denaturalization cases per month. Compare that to Biden’s record: a grand total of 24 cases filed across his entire four-year presidency. Trump’s team has already filed 22 cases and secured 15 denaturalization orders since Inauguration Day. That’s not a marginal improvement. That’s a completely different philosophy of governance.
The broader crackdown is equally muscular. Travel restrictions covering 39 high-risk countries. Continuous vetting of all 55 million active U.S. visa holders. Over 100,000 visas revoked. ICE has arrested more than 43,000 potential national security threats, including 1,416 known or suspected terrorists.
So naturally, Democrats are furious. Not at the attackers, but at our president, who is trying to stop them. Representative Pramila Jayapal branded the travel restrictions “bigoted” and “Islamophobic.” The ACLU sprinted to the defense of a Jordanian national suspected of funding terror organizations. Party allies keep floating the brilliant idea of abolishing ICE entirely.
Seriously — whose side are these people on? Americans are getting murdered by individuals who lied and cheated their way into citizenship, and the Democrat Party’s instinct is to call the guy enforcing the law a racist. That’s not a policy disagreement. That’s a dereliction of basic moral duty.
The covenant that must hold
Twenty-six million naturalized citizens live in this country. The vast majority are patriotic, law-abiding Americans who earned their place honestly and treasure it. They should welcome this crackdown more than anyone, because every fraudulent citizen cheapens the oath they took in good faith.
Citizenship is not a participation trophy. It is a privilege you earn and a promise you keep. President Trump grasps that. The question isn’t whether denaturalization goes too far.
