Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, in a statement, revealed a plan to help employ U.S military veterans to prevent school shootings across the United States. His statement is a reaction to the killing of 19 children and two teachers in a school shooting on May 24, 2022. The suspect in the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas is an 18-year-old Hispanic male.
Sen. Graham wrote on Twitter that “ROTC instructors trained to use firearms should get permission to own weapons to boost school security.”
Graham disclosed he will be working on “creating a certification process allowing former military members to undergo school security training and be available to school districts all over the country.” The senator continued that it was time to mobilize former and retired service members to secure schools. He added that schools are “soft targets that contain children, the most valuable possession and future of the country. They must be protected.”
“We have hundreds of thousands of well-trained former military members who could bring a lot to the table in terms of school security,” Graham wrote on Twitter. “ROTC instructors with firearms training should be allowed to possess weapons to enhance school security.”
“I will be working to create a certification process that allows former military members to go through school security training and become available to school districts throughout the country,” Graham continued. “It is time to mobilize our retired and former service members who are willing to help secure our schools. Our schools are soft targets. They contain our most valuable possession – our children, the future of our country – and must be protected. ”
Graham concluded by stating that schools should get similar security to capital buildings, courthouses, banks, etc.
