Homan Pushes Back on Criticism
Border Czar Tom Homan is not buying the left’s sad little fantasy that closing an ICE detention center will somehow make immigration enforcement disappear. After touring the facility himself, Homan said critics are judging it like it should be a resort, when in reality it is a detention center built to hold people who are being processed under federal law. His message was plain: this is not a hotel, and nobody should be pretending it is. If someone wants a luxury stay, they should probably look elsewhere than a jail-style facility used for enforcement.
Many Detainees Cannot Be Released
Homan argued that a big part of the public debate gets the law wrong. He said many of the people inside the facility are in mandatory detention status, which means federal officials cannot simply open the doors and send them home. He pointed to expedited removals, certain criminal cases, and final order cases as examples of detainees who must stay in custody by statute. In other words, this is not a choice between keeping the facility open and setting everyone free. The law, once again, refuses to cooperate with the political theater.
Closing a Facility Would Not End Enforcement
According to Homan, if one state forces a facility shut, ICE would still arrest, detain, and remove illegal immigrants. The only difference would be where the detainees are sent, and that could mean placing them farther from their families and communities. Homan said those arrests would just move to Texas, Arizona, or somewhere else ICE can continue doing the job. It is a classic case of activists celebrating a headline while ignoring the part where reality keeps showing up to work.
Homan Ties Current Crackdown to Biden’s Border Chaos
Homan also tied the current enforcement push to what he described as the border disaster under Joe Biden. He said President Donald Trump is back in the Oval Office mainly because voters were fed up with open-border policies and the damage they caused. Homan blamed Biden-era leadership for historic illegal immigration, including millions of crossings and large numbers of so-called gotaways. He said those failures left ICE with no real choice but to step up arrests now. The border was not fine, despite what the press club liked to pretend, and Americans know exactly who created the mess.
