Taxpayer-Funded Texas Waterpark Faces Backlash for Hosting ‘Muslim-Only’ Day with Islamic Dress Code

You pay your taxes. You fund your local parks, pools, and recreation centers. And you do it with a pretty basic expectation: these public spaces belong to every citizen equally. Not just the ones with the right connections. Not just the ones who practice the approved religion. Everyone. That’s not some partisan talking point — it’s the bedrock promise of American civic life.

Yet more and more, taxpayer-funded facilities are being parceled out to preferred identity groups while ordinary Americans get a locked door and a shrug. The latest case isn’t unfolding in Portland or San Francisco. It’s happening in Texas. And if it doesn’t make your blood boil, you’re not paying attention.

A Texas waterpark paid for by taxpayer funds has sparked backlash after the waterpark announced a Muslim-only day at the park to celebrate Eid.

The June 1 plan for the “Muslim only” day at Epic Waters waterpark in Grand Prairie sparked controversy when promotional materials were released this week. The event requires a “modest dress code” and will only provide Halal-slaughtered meat.

Read that again. Not a private venue. Not a mosque. A city-owned, publicly funded waterpark — shutting its doors to every non-Muslim resident who helped pay for the place.

Eighty-eight million reasons to be furious

Epic Waters isn’t some rinky-dink splash pad. It’s an 80,000-square-foot indoor waterpark that cost Grand Prairie taxpayers $88 million to build. Voters of every faith approved a quarter-cent sales tax in 2014 to make it happen. The facility opened in 2017 as a public amenity for the entire community.

Now the East Plano Islamic Center has claimed this public space for a private religious celebration — and they’re charging $55 a head for the privilege. So you get to pay twice: once through your taxes and once at the door. Generous of them.

Attendees must dress “in accordance with Islamic values.” Suggested swimwear for women includes full head-to-toe coverings. Guests are told to “uphold Islamic etiquette” by “lowering the gaze” and practicing ḥayāʾ throughout their visit. In other words, a taxpayer-built American recreation center will operate under Islamic behavioral codes for the day. Christians, Jews, Hindus, atheists — the same people whose tax dollars built the wave pool — need not apply.

Think about what’s actually being demanded here. This isn’t just about who gets excluded. It’s about what gets imposed. Requiring visitors to a publicly funded American facility to observe religious codes rooted in a tradition that frequently collides with Western norms of individual liberty and gender equality isn’t accommodation. It’s an imposition — and one that runs directly counter to the freedoms this country was built on.

The cover-up tells the whole story

When conservative commentator Sara Gonzales broke the news on social media, the reaction was swift and brutal. So the organizers did what people do when they know they’re caught: they scrambled. The promotional flyer was quietly edited, swapping “Muslim Only Event” for the much friendlier “Modest Dress Only.”

Gonzales wasn’t buying it. “The event organizer is trying to cover their tracks. They’ve now updated the graphic to read ‘Modest Dress Only’ instead of the previous ‘Muslim Only.’ Unfortunately for them, screenshots are forever.”

That stealth edit is practically a confession. They understood the exclusion was indefensible. But instead of scrapping the event, they just softened the marketing. The Islamic dress requirements, the halal-only menu, the behavioral mandates — all still in place. Nothing changed but the font on the flyer.

Try this with a Bible and see what happens

Radio host Dana Loesch nailed the fundamental problem: “How is a taxpayer-funded, city-owned entity allowed to discriminate against non-Muslims at a public water park? There would be literal riots if Muslims were similarly excluded and we all know that’s 100% accurate.”

Dead on. Picture a taxpayer-funded facility announcing “Christians Only” swim night — hymns on the loudspeaker, modest dress per Biblical standards. The ACLU would have filed a lawsuit before the pool heater kicked on. CNN would preempt programming. But wrap the same exclusion in Islamic tradition? Crickets from the usual “separation of church and state” crusaders.

Boycott Epic Waters

Every American has the right to worship freely. That liberty is sacred. But no faith — absolutely none — gets to hijack a public facility built with everyone’s money and slam the door on everyone else. Grand Prairie residents should flood city hall with calls. The rest of us can speak with our wallets. Boycott Epic Waters until its leadership remembers a simple truth: in America, public means public.

Key Takeaways

  • A taxpayer-funded Texas waterpark is excluding non-Muslims from a public facility on June 1.
  • Grand Prairie voters of all faiths funded the $88 million facility and deserve equal access.
  • Organizers quietly changed “Muslim Only” to “Modest Dress Only” after backlash — a tacit admission of wrongdoing.
  • No religion is entitled to commandeer public spaces built with every citizen’s tax dollars.
