This past Thursday, an official lawsuit from Planned Parenthood has been slammed against South Dakota due to the state taking measures to block the distribution of chemical abortion medications via telemedicine.
The new ruling from South Dakota concerning the new abortion pull would end up requiring any woman seeking to utilize a chemical abortion to take both of the abortion pills, mifepristone and misoprostol, in person at the licensed abortion clinic. This ends up meaning that the patient would need to come back to the clinic after the specified waiting period in order to get a dose of the second drug needed for the procedure.
Kristi Noem, the Republican Governor of South Dakota, put forth this new rule as part of an executive order that was signed back in September.
The signed order is currently slated to go into effect as of the 27th of January. It was officially finalized by a legislative interim rules review committee earlier this past month.
The implementation of this executive order would make South Dakota the only state to require three separate visits to a clinic in order to go through with a medication abortion. The state has also placed mandatory waiting periods between all three of these visits.
The Planned Parenthood clinic out in Sioux Falls is currently the only abortion clinic in South Dakota. As of writing, Planned Parenthood has officially filed the lawsuit alongside the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota.
“We are hopeful the court will stop this rule from going into effect so that South Dakotans can choose for themselves when and how to access health care services, including abortion,” stated the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States, Sarah Stoesz.
One spokesperson for the office of the governor issued a response to the lawsuit from Planned Parenthood, stating that Noem is “focused on protecting women’s health” while “the ACLU and Planned Parenthood have shown that they are more worried about their bottom line.”
Many Pro-life advocates also gave a statement about the lawsuit, stating that the abortion giant’s whole motivation for their stance stems from profits rather than a concern for the health and safety of women.
“This lawsuit reveals Planned Parenthood’s true motive: increasing its profit margin, no matter the risks to the health and safety of women and girls,” stated Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List.
“Chemical abortion drugs, favored by the abortion industry for reducing their overhead costs, are dangerous and landing women in the hospital at an alarming rate,” stated Dannenfelser. “Thankfully seven states including South Dakota have taken action to protect women and girls and more are considering it every day.”
The lawsuit in question was filed just a day prior to the annual March for Life, which has been a yearly event ever since the Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
