The Democratic Party has spent years presenting itself as the party of accountability, standards, and moral clarity. That is why the growing controversy surrounding Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner has become such a headache—not just for his campaign, but for national Democrats who keep finding themselves forced to answer questions about him.
And judging by a confrontation outside Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee headquarters this week, Republicans have no intention of letting the issue fade away quietly.
Fox News Digital obtained video showing Republican staffers from the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Republican National Committee staging a demonstration outside the DSCC’s Washington headquarters. The protesters arrived wearing towels around their waists, a reference to a reportedly sexually suggestive Kik profile photo linked to Platner that showed him shirtless with a towel wrapped around his waist.
The scene quickly turned into political street theater.
As Sen. Bernie Sanders exited the building, one protester shouted a question that Republicans clearly wanted Democrats to answer.
“Do you support Graham Platner even though he’s on Kik?”
Rather than directly addressing the controversy, Sanders immediately tried to redirect the conversation.
“Are you with the Republican party?” he asked.
When the protester responded that it did not matter, Sanders became visibly irritated and launched into a familiar counterattack.
“Are you talking about morality and corruption? With President Trump?” Sanders shouted before ending the exchange with a terse “Have a nice day” and walking away.
For Republicans, the moment highlighted what they view as a glaring contradiction. Democrats have been quick to condemn controversial behavior when it involves Republicans, yet many party leaders continue supporting Platner despite a growing list of problems that have dominated headlines during his Senate campaign.
The controversies extend well beyond the Kik profile.
Platner has faced scrutiny over a tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol that he has since covered. Old Reddit posts resurfaced containing comments that blamed rape victims, promoted racial stereotypes, mocked a Purple Heart veteran, and appeared to encourage political violence. More recently, reports emerged regarding sexually explicit messages allegedly exchanged with women during his marriage.
The Kik account added another layer of controversy because of the app’s reputation. Child-safety organizations have criticized Kik for years over its association with child exploitation cases and anonymous messaging. Fox News Digital noted that it found no evidence that Platner communicated with minors through the platform. The controversy instead centers on the account’s existence, the profile photo, and its appearance alongside other damaging reports about his personal conduct.
Republican protesters nevertheless seized on the issue, chanting “Platner is a creep!” and “Delete your Kik!” while carrying signs attacking the candidate.
For his part, Platner has disputed portions of reporting about his personal life. His wife has also criticized the public disclosure of private marital matters. The candidate has apologized for past online comments and maintains that he obtained the tattoo years ago without understanding its Nazi associations.
Still, none of that has stopped Republicans from trying to make Platner a national issue.
The larger problem for Democrats is that every defense of Platner shifts attention away from the issues they would rather discuss. Instead of talking about policy, Democratic figures increasingly find themselves answering questions about Reddit posts, controversial tattoos, Kik accounts, and personal scandals.
That dynamic was on full display outside DSCC headquarters. Republicans showed up in towels, reporters gathered, cameras rolled, and one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable figures found himself in an argument he clearly did not want to have.
With Maine’s Democratic primary approaching, Republicans appear determined to ensure those questions continue following Platner—and anyone willing to stand beside him.
