Prince Charles has professed his love for Camilla Parker Bowles for many decades at this point and has been officially married to her since back in 2005. The pair took their relationship, and the ensuing courtship, extremely slowly in the wake of the death of Princess Diana, the beloved ex-wife of Prince Charles who was most commonly known as “the people’s princess.” The United Kingdom still feels the sting from Diana’s death and quite a few have only recently, and begrudgingly, started to accept Camilla as the bride of the future king.
All this time it was common thought that Camilla would take on the title of Princess Consort once the Prince of Wales takes on his role as he ascends to the throne as a sort of symbolic deference to Diana. However, in the wake of the celebration of the 70th year of Queen Elizabeth’s reign as monarch, Her Majesty has stated that she has an entirely different plan.
“When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me,” Elizabeth stated in a release, which was posted on the official Royal website and on the verified Instagram account for the Royal Family.
“And it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
Royal fans rushed in and were quick to spout their thoughts on the announcement.
” Diana, the real Queen forever,” stated one commenter. Another responded with their agreement, “Diana, the one and only.”
The pushback to Camilla stems from the fact that Charles has an affair with her all while still married to Diana, which was a major factor in their decision to end their marriage in divorce. Many royal historians have issued the claim that the marriage was doomed either way. However, these sentiments have had no effect on trying to improve the public image of Camilla in relation to Diana. The public will always state that she is seen as the home wrecker of the royal family.
Despite the hate, there are still a massive number of royal fans who were ecstatic to have Camilla be handed such a title, which technically she would have inherited anyway given that she is legally married to the future king. Prince William, the second in line to the throne, “liked” the announcement on social media from the account he shares with his partner, Kate Middleton. Given that Diana was his mother, he would have been the main suspect to have issues with the announcement, but it seems as though he accepts his stepmother getting the important title.
