William Jewell Mourns MicahJo Barnett
A heartbreaking scene unfolded in Liberty, Missouri, during William Jewell College’s season opener against Fort Lewis College. MicahJo Barnett, a junior running back for William Jewell and a business administration major, died after suffering a medical emergency on the sideline in the first quarter. Barnett had just given his team the lead by scoring the game’s only touchdown. Paramedics treated him on the sideline for several minutes before he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to local reports cited in the source material.
The Game Was Canceled After the Emergency
After the news of Barnett’s death, the game between William Jewell and Fort Lewis College was canceled with William Jewell leading 7-0. That lone score came from Barnett, making an already painful moment even harder for teammates, coaches, students, and fans who had gathered for the start of a new football season. William Jewell College released a statement saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.” In moments like this, the scoreboard becomes very small, and the loss of a young life becomes the only thing that matters.

His Touchdown Became a Painful Memory
Video shared online showed another angle of Barnett’s first-quarter touchdown, a moment that began with joy and quickly became a scene of grief for the William Jewell community. Barnett had already made his mark on the field before this season began. He led William Jewell in rushing in 2025, and over two seasons with the Cardinals he rushed for 457 yards and six touchdowns. Those numbers tell part of the story, but anyone who has watched team sports knows the deeper measure is found in the locker room, in practice, and in the way teammates speak when the game is suddenly no longer the focus.

Teammates Shared What He Meant To Them
Following Barnett’s death, William Jewell players remembered him with words that showed both grief and love. One player said, “He’s always going to be with us.” Another said, “He never acted like he was better than anybody and we’ll play for him like he played for us.” Players also said, “We love him.” A vigil was scheduled at William Jewell for Saturday at 8 p.m. to honor Barnett and his family. Our prayers are with his loved ones, teammates, coaches, classmates, and the entire William Jewell community as they face a loss no family or team should ever have to endure.
