A Young Lifesaver Gets His Moment
President Trump on Monday welcomed teen lifeguard Ryder Williams to the Oval Office after Williams saved the life of a 10-year-old boy named Nathaniel Rai. Nathaniel and his father were also there for the meeting, turning the visit into a rare good-news moment in Washington, which is always a nice change from the usual swamp aerobics. Trump praised Williams, saying, “It’s an honor to be with Ryder Williams,” and added that he understood the teen “was a winner from the first time they saw him as a lifeguard.” He also said Williams “saved this young gentleman,” referring to Nathaniel, whom Trump said he had spoken with at length.
CNN Turns the Room Toward North Korea
During that Oval Office meeting, CNN White House Correspondent Kristen Holmes shifted the focus to foreign policy and asked Trump about his conversation with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. Holmes pressed him on whether he was “prioritizing the interests of adversaries in North Korea” over long-time partners by scaling down military exercises with South Korea. Trump rejected that framing and said he was making things safer, not riskier. He added that Kim Jong Un had always treated him “with great respect.” Holmes then followed up by asking whether Kim had asked him to scale back those exercises, and that is when the temperature in the room changed fast.
Trump Fires Back at Kristen Holmes
Trump told Holmes, “Quiet!” and called her “very disrespectful” in front of Ryder Williams. He then asked Williams, “Don’t you find her disrespectful?” before turning back to the reporter and asking who she was with. When Holmes replied that she was with CNN, Trump answered, “You’re Fake news!” It was classic Trump, blunt, unscripted, and not exactly the kind of answer CNN was hoping to clip for a polite afternoon segment. Holmes also asked Trump about his assistant Natalie Harp, a question that came during the same Oval Office appearance.
CNN Defends Its Reporter
CNN later defended Holmes through its communications account, saying it stood firmly behind her and rejected the attacks “in the strongest possible terms.” The network’s response came after the Oval Office exchange made the rounds online, with the clip drawing attention because it happened during a visit meant to honor a teenage lifeguard and the young boy whose life he saved.
