A former U.S. soldier faces federal charges for bombing a Manhattan ICE office. Andrew Arrabaca, a 43-year-old Army veteran, plotted this attack for months. After igniting the liquid, he fired between five and seven rounds from a pellet gun. During his arrest, he told officers he was an “anti-American, anti-government extremist.”
Weapons and Mental Health
The suspect carried a frightening array of tools during his arrest. He wore a military-style helmet and carried two axes. He also had three fixed-blade knives, a hammer, and a machete. A wagon he pulled featured a sign that read “ICE Off Our Streets.” Prosecutors noted he was prescribed mental health medication in 2020. However, he stopped taking the pills about a year later. Defense lawyers argued he was suicidal and needed a hospital. They asked for him to be sent to a Veterans Health Administration facility. U.S. Magistrate Judge Robyn F. Tarnofsky rejected their request. She ordered the suspect to be evaluated at a federal lockup in Brooklyn. The judge said he had been offered help before and did not accept it. She told Arrabaca directly, “The crime you’re charged with is troubling.”
