The Left Wins Berlin’s Biggest Share
In Sunday’s Berlin local election, The Left, described in the report as the former East German Communist Party, emerged as the strongest party with 25 percent. The source attributes much of that result to younger female voters. The AfD also increased its share in the capital to 16 percent, while the report says it finished first in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Established parties, including Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats, lost support as voters moved toward both the left and right. It will now try to form a government with other left-wing parties, putting public safety and property rights at the center of Berlin’s coalition talks.
The Victory Party Draws Scrutiny
The controversy began at The Left’s election-night party in Neukölln, described in the report as an Arab quarter of Berlin. Issa Remmo, identified as the head of the city’s notorious Lebanese Remmo criminal clan, appeared at the gathering. So did Ibrahim Ibrahim, head of the United Palestinian National Committee. The report says that committee is considered a front organization for Hamas and the People’s Front for the Liberation of Palestine, or PFLP. A post from Visegrád 24 showed The Left Bundestag member Ferat Koçak with Ibrahim at the party. For a party whose candidate says it fights criminal clans, the image created an immediate credibility problem.
The Invitation Denial Meets a Posted Chat
The Left initially denied inviting Remmo and said he had been sent away. Mayoral candidate Elif Eralp told ZDF, “He was not invited and was sent away again. We have nothing to do with the mob. We combat it.” That answer faced new scrutiny after Remmo’s son, Firas, posted a chat with Koçak. In the exchange, Koçak wrote, “Greetings and props to your father. When are you in your office so I can come by?” The thread also showed Koçak asking Firas to share a speech criticizing what he called the “Hysterical debate” over criminal Arab clans. “Please ask all your people to share,” Koçak wrote. Firas answered, “Sure, Bro.”
Videos Add to the Political Problem
Firas later wrote, “We are part of something truly great,” and described the group as united, committed, and able to accomplish more together. The source described the gathering as a largely migrant crowd, while videos showed attendees dancing and ululating during the celebration. The footage does not answer every question about who was invited or who was asked to leave, but the posted messages make it harder to dismiss the Remmo connection as a random encounter. They also raise a basic political question: can The Left promise to confront criminal networks while its lawmakers maintain direct contact with people tied to the controversy?
Coalition Talks Now Face Extra Pressure
The election has already weakened the established-party bloc and strengthened forces on both sides of Germany’s political spectrum. McMahon’s separate discussion focused on what comes next for Germany and how long Friedrich Merz may remain in office. In Berlin, however, The Left’s 25-percent result now comes with questions about the company it kept on election night and the political outreach shown in Koçak’s messages. Coalition partners will have to decide whether those questions are a side issue or a test of the party’s promises on public safety.
