In a statement that was released this past Monday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed that a “proliferation of false or misleading narratives” about COVID-19 is causing an increase in the threat of terrorism and violence.
The DHS issued a terrorism advisory bulletin this past Monday in an effort to warn of a “heightened threat environment” fueled mostly by “false or misleading narratives and conspiracy theories” that are spreading online and undermining “public trust in government institutions.” The release from the DHS also cited “calls for violence” and various threats from outside terror groups.
“The United States remains in a heightened threat environment fueled by several factors, including an online environment filled with false or misleading narratives and conspiracy theories, and other forms of mis- dis- and mal-information (MDM) introduced and/or amplified by foreign and domestic threat actors,” started the document. The warning is slated to expire mid way through June unless steps are taken to renew it.
This memo comes in the wake of the administration of Old Uncle Joe trying to tighten the reins on the spread of “misinformation and disinformation” online. This past week, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tried to urge the popular music and podcasting platform Spotify to hit Joe Rogan, host of one of the most popular podcasts in the world, with stronger penalties after already taking steps to ad advisory warning to some of his episodes. Spotify has since taken down almost 100 previous episodes of the Rogan’s podcast, but have stated it was done at the request of Rogan himself.
Groups of censorship advocates, media outlets, and many progressive activists have set their crosshairs on Rogan over the past few weeks over a couple of interviews he hosts with doctors that were critical of how the federal government was handling COVID-19. Togan has also been a target of hostilities for his use of the n-word in his past.
The release from the DHS just lumped in “misleading narratives” about COVID-19 with cries by foreign terror heads for “retaliation” targeting the United States as as the main drivers of terror events across the U.S.
“The proliferation of false or misleading narratives, which sow discord or undermine public trust in U.S. government institutions,” is a “key” factor in the “current heightened threat environment,” claimed the bulletin.
“For example, there is widespread online proliferation of false or misleading narratives regarding unsubstantiated widespread election fraud and COVID-19. Grievances associated with these themes inspired violent extremist attacks during 2021,” claimed the DHS memo. “Malign foreign powers have and continue to amplify these false or misleading narratives in efforts to damage the United States.”
Rogan has issued an apology for his past actions and responded to the backlash as a whole by stating that the attacks were just a “political hit job” for the most part.
“In a lot of ways, all this is a relief, ’cause that video had always been out there. It’s like, this is a political hit job. And so they’re taking all this stuff that I’ve ever said that’s wrong, and smushing it all together. But it’s good ’cause it makes me address some s*** that I really wish wasn’t out there,” stated Rogan.
“You should apologize if you regret something,” he stated while leading to his conclusion. “This idea that you should never apologize, like if you regret something, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with apologizing. But I do think you have to be very careful not to apologize for nonsense.”
