DeSantis took the stage with an activist who posted QAnon-related conspiracy theories on social media

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office in Miami, which was handpicked to reinforce his rejection of critical race theory, has expressed beliefs connected with QAnon conspiracy theories and appears to encourage those who invaded the US Capitol on Jan. 6.

DeSantis was flanked by Eulalia Maria Jimenez, the chair of the Miami chapter of Moms for Liberty, as he praised legislation to combat critical race theory earlier this week. During the press conference, Jimenez referred to last year’s protests following the assassination of George Floyd as “race warfare” and railed against critical race theory teachings.

Jimenez, on the other hand, mirrored QAnon conspiracy claims on Instagram, writing about “children being smuggled down underground tunnels for the amusement of devils” and posting a photo from the Jan. 6 riots with the comment “the storm is upon us.” “Believe in the process.” Covid vaccinations were also dubbed “poison” by her.

This is the second time this year that the Republican governor, who is seen as a possible presidential candidate in 2024, has given the limelight to someone who appears to believe in conspiracy theories. DeSantis stood by during a September press conference when a speaker said he refused to take Covid-19 vaccines because they “alter your RNA.”

“What I am is a concerned parent fighting for the liberties of parents and children in the school system,” said Jimenez, who runs the group Moms for Liberty. She has been extremely critical of Miami-Dade school officials over mask mandates.

Jimenez said that she has been harassed by people linked with Miami Antifa groups and that they have been publishing “lies” about her and other concerned citizens. Her tweets had previously been reported on Twitter by a group calling itself Miami Against Fascism. Someone “falling for that narrative” was “really sad,” she said.

A spokesman for the governor, Christina Pushaw, defended the governor’s decision to invite Jimenez to the Ocala press conference on Wednesday, saying that what she said there was “completely on board” with DeSantis’ message.

“She was not chosen because of posting right-wing or conspiratorial content,” Pushaw said. She added that the administration picked Jimenez because of her involvement with Moms for Liberty, a nonprofit of mostly conservative parents that advocate for parental choice and against mask mandates and critical race theory.

“It’s not on us to look into their private social media account and police what they say,” she said. “We want people on stage that is line with our message.”

During his news conference on Wednesday, DeSantis called on the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature to approve a bill codifying an existing ban on the use of critical race theory in public schools. DeSantis termed critical race theory “nonsense” promoted by “elites,” and said he wanted to allow parents to sue school systems that teach classes based on the premise that racism is inherent in institutions and laws.

Jimenez told the crowd at the press conference that her father was a political prisoner in his native Cuba. She presented herself as a mother of six and a holistic therapist who became politically involved following the Covid-19 crisis and protests last year.

She then added that as she became politically engaged, she became aware of a “full-on attack on our humanity, our country, our children” and lambasted critical race theory. “Critical race theory, no matter which way you slice it, breeds division and segregation,” Jimenez said.

“You’re wonderful. That was so good,” DeSantis told her after she spoke.

In a video shared on Instagram Jimenez can be heard saying: “Muzzling humanity across the board is not political, mandating people to inject themselves with poison is not political, men becoming women, women becoming men is not political. Children being smuggled in underground tunnels for the enjoyment of demons is not political. Wake up.”
