Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis fired back with a sharp jab after former President Barack Obama warned that the Justice Department should never be used to target political opponents — a comment that immediately reopened one of the most bitter fights in modern American politics.
“The Russia collusion hoax would like a word,” DeSantis wrote on X.
The exchange erupted after Obama appeared on CBS with Stephen Colbert and warned about what he described as the growing politicization of the Department of Justice under President Donald Trump’s administration. Obama argued that preserving DOJ independence is critical to maintaining public trust in the legal system.
“The White House shouldn’t be able to direct the attorney general to go around prosecuting whoever the president wants prosecuted,” Obama said.
“The awesome power of the state, you can’t have a situation where whoever is in charge of the government starts using that to go after their political enemies or reward their friends,” he added.
Obama framed the issue as one of constitutional norms rather than strictly legal requirements, arguing that some restraints historically depended on presidents voluntarily respecting institutional boundaries.
“There were a couple norms that I followed, even though they weren’t law,” Obama said. “And we’re going to have to do some work to return to this basic norm.”
He specifically argued that the attorney general should function independently rather than as “the president’s consigliere.”
Obama also warned that politicizing federal law enforcement poses a unique danger to the country.
“We can survive a lot — bad policy, funky elections, there’s a bunch of stuff that we can overcome,” he said. “We can’t overcome the politicization of the criminal justice system.”
But DeSantis’ response highlighted the immediate Republican counterargument: many conservatives believe the Russia investigation itself represented exactly the kind of politically motivated law enforcement Obama now claims to oppose.
That controversy continues to define perceptions of the Obama administration and federal intelligence agencies among much of the Republican base.
The FBI opened its counterintelligence investigation into possible Trump campaign links to Russia during the 2016 election. The inquiry later expanded under Special Counsel Robert Mueller after Trump took office. Mueller’s investigation documented numerous contacts between Trump associates and Russian-linked individuals but ultimately concluded investigators did not establish that the Trump campaign coordinated or conspired with the Russian government’s election interference efforts.
For Republicans, however, the years-long investigation became symbolic of what they viewed as weaponized intelligence and law enforcement institutions targeting a sitting president.
That argument intensified again in 2025 when Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard accused Obama-era officials of politicizing intelligence surrounding Russian interference claims.
According to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Obama directed the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment that became foundational to subsequent investigations into Trump and Russia.
Gabbard claimed the assessment “served as the basis for what was essentially a years-long coup against the duly elected President of the United States.”
“There is irrefutable evidence detailing how President Obama and his national security team directed the creation of an Intelligence Community Assessment that they knew was false,” Gabbard said.
Critics have strongly disputed those allegations, arguing multiple intelligence agencies independently concluded Russia interfered in the election and that the investigations were justified based on available evidence at the time.
Still, DeSantis’ one-line response captured how deeply the Russia investigation remains embedded in Republican political memory nearly a decade later.
