This past Wednesday, Ron DeSantis, the Republican Governor of Florida, went with his wife to her cancer treatment as groups of Democrat critics attacked, criticized, and mocked him for allegedly just taking time off.
White DeSantis’s schedule for more public appearances has been lower than normal for the last few weeks of the year, the governor has not taken a vacation as some Democrats seem to imply, and has been staying busy with fewer events in the public light such as staff meetings. However, this past Wednesday, Jerry Demings, the Mayor of Orange County, fired off a horrid torrent of criticisms at DeSantis and suggested that the governor has apparently abandoned the state to the new and rapidly spreading Omicron Variant of the COVId-19 virus.
“Our residents, all Florida residents should be outraged, and they should ask the question, ‘Now, where’s our state? Where’s our governor?’” exclaimed Demings. “Where is Ron DeSantis now? When was the last time you saw the governor do a press briefing regarding COVID-19?”
That very same day, however, DeSantis had taken Casey, his wife, to her cancer treatment session, reported Fox News after being informed by a spokesman for the governor’s office.
These comments from the mayor about DeSantis were quickly followed up on Friday by none other than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who launched a verbal assault on DeSantis in the wake of her being photographed taking vacation time in Florida as COVID-19 cases rapidly escalated in her home state of New York.
“Hasn’t Gov. DeSantis been inexplicably missing for like 2 weeks? If he’s around, I would be happy to say hello. His social media team seems to have been posting old photos for weeks,” she stated on Twitter in the wake of DeSantis’ campaign that mocked her for taking vacation time in Miami Beach.
“In the meantime, perhaps I could help with local organizing. Folks are quite receptive here,” she stated before trying to laud New York’s COVID-19 response. “I’d also be happy to share some notes from @GovKathyHochul’s work in NY since he seems to be in need of tips!”
One data analyst for DeSantis’ office, Kyle Lamb, stated this past Thursday that DeSantis was not taking vacation time as multiple claims started rolling around the web. In response, Lamb tweeted:
Just FYI, @GovRonDeSantis is not on vacation. Literally no one from our office has said that he is. Anyone pushing that could have easily seen the public schedule and seen that he’s taking calls and meetings this past week. Not having public events does not = “vacation”
This is a really odd, desperate attempt to make a controversy where none exists.
Last year, there were no public events on the calendar between Dec. 22-29. The Governor is doing work behind the scenes with a lighter public schedule just like last year.
DeSantis, along with this wife, made the official announcement of her breast cancer diagnosis back in October.
“I am saddened to report that Florida’s esteemed First Lady and my beloved wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer,” stated DeSantis back in October. “As the mother of three young children, Casey is the centerpiece of our family and has made an impact on the lives of countless Floridians through her initiatives as First Lady.”
“As she faces the most difficult test of her life, she will have not only have my unwavering support but the support of our entire family, as well as the prayers and well wishes from Floridians across our state,” he went on to say. “Casey is a true fighter, and she will never, never, never give up.”
