Gun Allegation Ends in Arrest
Hawaii congressional candidate Kirill Basin is now facing a serious criminal charge after police say he pulled a gun on two Maui County workers inside a government building on Friday morning. According to the reports, the 40-year-old Democrat was arrested later that day after running off, and he has been charged with Terroristic Threatening in the First Degree. That is not the kind of campaign message anyone puts on a yard sign, unless the slogan is somehow “please do not hand me public office.”
Police Say The Incident Started Inside A County Building
Officials say Basin entered the Maui County government building during an argument with county workers and then brandished his firearm. Police were not called right away, with a delay of about an hour and a half before authorities got involved. Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said the department takes incidents like this seriously and praised his personnel for responding quickly and professionally. The details are still developing, but the basic facts are ugly enough already. When a public official or candidate starts flashing a gun at workers in a government building, that is not “passionate politics.” That is a public safety problem.
Earlier Threats Raise Bigger Questions
This arrest did not come out of nowhere. Two days earlier, Basin was escorted out of a South Maui town hall after arguing with Council member Tom Cook and staff. Police later said he confronted Cook’s executive assistant, Jared Agtunong, in a parking lot, forcing officers to step in again. Agtunong then filed for a temporary restraining order, saying Basin had called him and sent a series of profanity-filled and threatening texts, including a message that said, “you’re f**ked.” Agtunong also said Basin told him he was “a piece of trash” and warned him to think of his family. Whatever else this is, it is not normal behavior, and voters should not shrug off repeated threats just because the person involved has a campaign logo.
A Serious Matter That Should Be Treated Seriously
The pattern here is disturbing. Multiple confrontations, repeated police contact, threatening messages, and now an arrest tied to a firearm inside a county building all point to a man who should be nowhere near public office until every detail is sorted out. Conservatives understand that law and order is not just a slogan. It is the line between a functioning society and a circus with badges, parking lots, and firearms. If the reports are accurate, this case deserves a hard look from law enforcement, election officials, and voters who are tired of seeing dangerous behavior dressed up as public service.
