Despite the dropping of mask mandates for the D.C. area, the kids will still be forced to mask up in the nation’s capital despite the fact that adults with them are free to walk around faces uncovered.
This past Monday, Muriel Bowser, the Mayor of D.C. officially released a statement that the COVID-19 indoor mask mandates will be “dialed back,” which will mean that most, but not all, indoor facilities will no longer be forced to make their customers and visitors wear a face covering. This rolling back did not manage to reach the schools, however, as kids are still being forced to use masks.
As reported by Fox News, “The places where people will no longer have to wear masks will be ‘[r]estaurants and bars,’ ‘[s]ports and entertainment venues,’ supermarkets, pharmacies, retail businesses, private offices, D.C. government offices and ‘[h]ouses of worship. But the district will still require masks at ‘schools, childcare facilities and libraries,’ as well as healthcare facilities, jails, and on public transit.”
In response to this release, the media put forth questions about when schools could possibly be included on the list of places that are no longer marked as biohazards. Bowser did not issue a response at all in regards to when kids would be included in the new rollbacks.
“That’s a good question,” she said in response. “We continue to work with our school communities over what they think it will take to keep kids safe and in school. We thought that our last group of little ones would have access to the vaccine in February. It turns out it’s going to be sometime later. So I don’t think that we’re going to have a decision about schools sometime soon.”
D.C. is not the first to sport a different set of standards for children and adults when it comes to COVID-19 restrictions. Many celebrities in Los Angeles were critiqued for their choice to go maskless despite the fact that the kids were still being forced to wear them. As reported by The Daily Wire:
Numerous celebrities and Left-wing politicians were out having a lovely time at this year’s Super Bowl in Los Angeles County, and they were notably without masks.
SoFi Stadium, where the Super Bowl was played, has a rule that masks are required indoors and outdoors during events with more than 5,000 people.
Among those partying it up maskless were Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, Jay-Z, Ellen DeGeneres, Will Ferrell, Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a “The Rock,” among others.
Social media quickly erupted with criticism, highlighting that schoolchildren in Los Angeles are still required to wear masks at school. Some also pointed out specific celebrities’ personal flip-flop, or hypocrisy on masks.
Despite the statements from people such as Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, that seem to insist that children are “resilient” and do not mind the masks at all, copious video evidence and common sense seem to highlight the fact that the opposite is true.
