Court halts $2B fund to unblock GOP immigration bill

DOJ hits pause after court order

The Justice Department said Monday it would follow a federal court order and stop moving forward with the Trump administration’s so-called anti-weaponization fund. That fund, pitched as a way to aid people who felt targeted or abused by the government, had drawn fire because it could channel nearly $2 billion in taxpayer money with very little clarity about who would get it. In Washington, that kind of vague setup is usually a flashing red light, not a green one. The DOJ said it strongly disagreed with the ruling, but for now it is keeping its feet on the brake.

Senate Republicans get breathing room

The pause matters because Senate Republicans had already slowed down a massive $72 billion immigration enforcement package over concerns tied to the fund. Some GOP senators worried the money could end up in the wrong hands, including people convicted of attacking police on Jan. 6, 2021. That is the sort of headache that can turn a budget fight into a full-blown political mess. With the fund sidelined, Republicans may now have enough breathing room to restart the budget reconciliation process and move the immigration bill forward without that pressure hanging over them.

Democrats smell blood in the water

Democrats are not wasting any time. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Republicans should not just talk about ending the fund, they should ban it in law if they mean it. He is also readying Democrats for a vote-a-rama, the Senate’s favorite marathon of amendments where everybody gets to toss political grenades until the chamber gets dizzy. Senate Democrats plan to press bills and amendments aimed at shutting the fund down completely, while also forcing Republicans to show where they stand on the issue in public.

Schumer and Rosen target the money

Sen. Jacky Rosen said she wants to redirect the $1.8 billion toward SNAP, Medicaid, and law enforcement grants that help local police hire more officers. That is a classic Washington move, take a vague federal slush fund and try to relabel it as something more popular before the public notices the scent of smoke. Her message was simple: if Republicans are serious about abandoning the fund, then they should have no problem killing it in statute. Until then, the fight is not over, just paused long enough for both sides to reload.
