After nearly nine decades of educating Christian students, the University of Valley Forge has announced that it will close its doors, bringing an end to an institution that has served generations of students preparing for ministry, leadership, and service.
The Pennsylvania university said Wednesday that it will suspend academic operations following the conclusion of the Summer 2026 semester, describing the decision as one reached only after extensive prayer, careful evaluation, and consultation among its leadership.
In a statement, the University’s Board of Trustees acknowledged the gravity of the announcement.
“After much prayer, careful consideration, and consultation, the Board of Trustees of the University of Valley Forge has made the difficult and painful decision to suspend academic operations at the conclusion of the Summer 2026 semester,” the statement said.
Located in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the University of Valley Forge is affiliated with the Assemblies of God USA and currently enrolls approximately 589 students, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
School officials cited ongoing financial challenges as the primary reason for the closure. According to CBS News, the university had spent considerable time pursuing strategic partnerships and exploring other options that could provide long-term financial stability. Those efforts, however, ultimately fell short.
The university also pointed to recent action by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which placed the school on “Show Cause” status. That designation indicates that an institution has failed to meet accreditation standards in at least one area and must demonstrate why its accreditation should continue.
University leaders said they carefully evaluated their financial position before concluding that continuing operations beyond the summer semester would not be responsible.
“Please know that until the very last moment, we had significant reason to believe there was a sustainable path forward,” the statement said. “However, that path did not materialize in time.”
The announcement reflected not only the financial realities facing the institution but also its sense of loss over the end of a mission that has lasted for generations.
“For 87 years, the University of Valley Forge has been a place where students have encountered God’s presence, discovered their callings, and been prepared for lives of service and leadership in the church and in the world,” the university wrote.

Administrators also addressed students directly, apologizing for the disruption the closure will cause.
“To our students, we are deeply sorry. We understand that this announcement disrupts your lives, your plans, and your sense of stability, and we are grieving for you and with you,” the statement said.
The university thanked students for their commitment to Christ, their dedication to learning, and their desire to serve others, adding that helping them complete their education is now the institution’s highest priority.
Officials said they are working with partner institutions, accrediting agencies, and regulatory bodies to make the transfer process as smooth as possible. According to CBS News, Eastern University, Messiah University, and Southeastern University have already offered to assist Valley Forge students as they continue their education elsewhere.
The school’s financial struggles were not new. According to Patch.com, the University of Valley Forge, founded in 1939, experienced early success but spent much of its later history confronting declining enrollment and ongoing financial pressures.
Unlike many larger colleges and universities, Valley Forge lacked a substantial endowment to help offset operating costs. Patch.com reported that the institution relied heavily on tuition and student fees to fund its operations, making it especially vulnerable as enrollment declined over time.
Although academic operations are ending, the university said staff members will remain available to assist students through the transition process.
The announcement concluded with a request for prayer and a message of hope despite the difficult circumstances.
“This is a painful moment for our community, but it is not one without hope,” the university wrote. “Throughout its 87-year history, the University of Valley Forge has faithfully prepared men and women to serve Christ around the world. While this chapter is drawing to a close, we trust that the Lord will continue His work through the lives of those who have been part of this mission in ways we cannot yet see.”
For thousands of alumni, students, and faculty members, the closure marks the end of a school that has served as more than a campus. It has been a place where careers began, ministries were launched, and lifelong friendships were formed. While the institution itself is preparing to close, university leaders say their immediate focus remains helping current students complete the next chapter of their educational journey.
