Charlie Kirk’s Ominous Prediction Becomes Reality

The sweep of Democratic Socialist-backed candidates in New York City’s Democratic primaries Tuesday has renewed debate over the ideological direction of the Democratic Party, while also reviving warnings conservative activist Charlie Kirk made years ago about socialism’s growing appeal among younger voters.

Candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored a series of victories in Democratic primary contests, defeating incumbent Reps. Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat. A third Mamdani-backed candidate also won a Democratic primary for an open congressional seat after the incumbent chose not to seek reelection, according to CNBC.

At the state level, Democratic Socialist candidate Aber Kawas won her New York State Senate primary. Kawas has previously drawn attention for controversial comments linking the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to “capitalism and racism, and white supremacy.”

Another successful candidate, Darializa Avila Chevalier, defeated Espaillat in her primary. According to the New York Post, Chevalier has advocated abolishing prisons, ending Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), legalizing prostitution and drug use, and ending U.S. military assistance to Israel. The newspaper also reported that she once referred to the United States as “a f***ing disgrace.”

Political observers have pointed to strong turnout among younger voters as a significant factor behind Tuesday’s results.

The outcome also brought renewed attention to comments Charlie Kirk made during a 2020 interview following the release of a YouGov/Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation poll. That survey found that 70 percent of millennials said they were either “extremely likely” or “somewhat likely” to vote for a socialist candidate.

“I’ve been signaling this alarm bell for years,” Kirk said at the time. “I’ve been wrongly accused of being an alarmist when I say that many young people are advocating for socialism. And it’s growing quickly.”

Kirk argued that he had watched those ideas gain traction on college campuses, where he believed professors and students were increasingly embracing socialist principles.

“And now I don’t think people are challenging me on that anymore,” he said. “I’ve been seeing it brewing up on college campuses, and I’ve seen kind of the clueless coalition of professors and students build an alliance to advocate for these horrendous ideas that will really wreak havoc on our country.”

He also predicted that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would not remain an isolated figure within Congress.

“I’ve told people she’s going to multiply in Congress,” Kirk said in 2020. “There are hyper-entitled, clueless millennials that are ready to undo every piece of true progress that our country has made over the last 200 years.”

The victories by several Democratic Socialist candidates in New York’s heavily Democratic districts have prompted renewed discussion of those earlier predictions, particularly since the nominees are widely expected to be competitive in November’s general election.

During the same interview, Kirk described a brief exchange he often used when discussing socialism with college students.

He said he would first ask whether they trusted the government. According to Kirk, many students answered no. He would then ask why they supported expanding the size and authority of a government they did not trust.

“Then you’re not a socialist,” Kirk said he would respond, arguing that skepticism toward government conflicted with support for a larger state. He maintained that many young Americans viewed socialism as a path toward greater freedom rather than increased government control.

“They think they’re advocating for freedom when they advocate for socialism,” Kirk said. “I know that might sound bizarre, but that’s the messaging campaign that the Marxists have undertaken.”

Kirk’s views on socialism and its relationship to Christianity are explored further in the 2026 edition of We Hold These Truths: The Two Beliefs That Still Hold the Power to Transform the Nation and the World, which argues that religious belief offers a direct challenge to socialist ideology.

The debate over socialism among younger Americans has existed for years. The same 2020 YouGov/Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation survey found that 57 percent of millennials said they believed the Declaration of Independence better guarantees freedom and equality than the Communist Manifesto, compared with 94 percent of members of the Silent Generation.

Kirk attributed that gap largely to what he viewed as failures in the American education system.

“We don’t teach history,” he said. “This is all because of our schools. Schools are the number one reason why this is all screwed up.”
