Often, it’s very easy to feel like the world has been flipped upside down. Reports of rare and unusual things seem to happen with an alarming degree of regularity. However, sometimes even the most bizarre events seem devoid of any sense of plausible logic.
One such ultra bizarre incident was recently reported by a hospital in the United Kingdom. While a request for a bomb squad at a hospital might be considered only somewhat strange, the reason for this emergency request truly was weird.
A patient whose name was withheld, most likely to protect his humility, arrived at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. According to the unnamed man, he slipped and took a bit of a spill. The accidental fall wasn’t what precipitated his need for medical attention.
It was the landing that caused all the fuss. However, despite defying logic, the man went sprawling to the floor, landing buttocks first on a 7-inch long WWII anti-tank artillery shell. Now, how this relic from the Second World War embedded itself through his trousers is not noted.
Triggered into rapid response mode to protect other patients, hospital workers notified the 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment. The bomb squad team raced into action to assure that the oddly lodged weaponry didn’t explode.
Hospital emergency staff removed the artillery shell before the bomb squad arrived. Thankfully, the shell was inert, so no one at the hospital was actually in imminent danger. Since the shell was a piece of lead designed to rip through the armored walls of tanks, the hospital was wise to exercise extreme caution.
Nevertheless, the patient was released with a prognosis for full recovery. However, we’re not certain how soon this chap’s pride will reciprocate. While the whole ordeal was certainly humiliating, a hospital spokesperson insisted that such anal lodgings are not so uncommon.
The hospital staffer said, “Sadly, it is an everyday occurrence . . . but I have never heard of the bomb squad being called out before.” So, while the quirky circumstances are not so uncommon, such a request for bomb squad assistance certainly meets the criteria for bizarre.
