Police in Billings, Montana, were called to a home shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday after reports of a shooting and a family disturbance, according to the source report. Officers arrived about ten minutes later and heard gunfire coming from the back of the house, which was already burning. They saw a man in the backyard and then heard more shots. Within minutes, the home was engulfed in flames. Authorities later found that eight members of the same family had been killed, including children, in a scene that no decent community should ever have to face.
The Gunman Was Reportedly Close to Home
The New York Post reported that the gunman was identified as 44-year-old Alan Smith, the adult son of the homeowners. That detail makes this already painful story even harder to process. Brad Ireland, whose ex-wife and two children were among those murdered, told the Post that Smith had lived with his parents in the Billings home for years after following them from Seattle to Montana. Ireland said Smith had attended Eastern Washington University but could not hold down a job, and that he spent much of his time on a computer. According to the report, Smith’s parents had asked him to leave the home about two weeks before the killings. That timing has now raised questions about whether anger over being forced out may have played a role, though investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive in the account provided.

Ireland also said there were many “red flags” involving Smith, though he said no one spoke up. He described Smith as verbally abusive at times, while also noting he was not known for violence before the massacre. That is the bitter part of so many tragedies like this.
