Backed into a Corner – President Zelenskyy May Have no Choice but to Make Concessions to Secure Peace

On any given day, the reporting on Ukraine boasts of a proud people defending their homeland. The brave Ukrainians are fighting against all odds. At the forefront of this surprisingly resilient resistance is a profoundly defiant leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy is being depicted as a modern-day Winston Churchill. His fervent speeches have been instrumental in motivating Ukrainians to fight. Zelenskyy’s pleas for specific types of help from NATO countries have been equally zealous.

The Ukrainian president has pleaded with the United States and its NATO allies for increased support. While there have been steps to help fortify Ukraine, these measures have not lived up to the expectations of the Ukrainian leader.

It’s like tossing a leaky lifeboat to a drowning shipwreck survivor. They will continue to fight to stay afloat, despite the obvious. Eventually, without a complete rescue, they will drown. For all her noble efforts to battle the powerful Russian war machine, Ukraine is slowly drowning.

The ineptitude of NATO and its allies has essentially backed Ukraine into a corner. Despite his energetic pleas to stand firm and fight, Zelenskyy is watching his country being destroyed. Without an increased commitment, Ukraine may not cede the entire country to Russia.

However, as the battle wages on, bigger chunks of Ukraine are basically being leveled. Presented with far more resistance than he expected, this seems to be the alternative strategy of Vladimir Putin. Russia may not win, but there will be little left of Ukraine.

Leveling Ukraine to a point where it’s no longer recognizable appears to be the objective. Again, without a dramatic increase in military firepower, Volodymyr Zelenskyy must weigh the consequences of continuing to fight. It appears he may be signaling his decision.

During an interview with Russian journalists, the Ukrainian president made this obvious. Zelenskyy admitted that he is ready and willing to examine a number of options that would end the destruction being waged against his country.

He may have been left with no other choice. In the interview, Zelenskyy says that Ukraine would consider becoming a neutral nation as part of a peace agreement. He also said his country would consent to a guarantee of never possessing a nuclear weapon.

The Ukrainian president spoke Russian during the 90-minute interview. He was clearly pleading with the Russian people. Zelenskyy said, “Security guarantees and neutrality, non-nuclear status of our state. We are ready to go for it. This is the most important point.”

These are concessions that do not align with his impassioned speeches of defiance against Russian aggression. It seems the ineptitude of NATO and the Joe Biden White House has left him with few alternatives.

In response to the Russian invasion, many proclaimed the unified effort from NATO as a refreshing surprise. However, in most respects, it has been little more than lip service. The sanctions, proclaimed as a deterrent against an invasion, did not stop Putin.

As the world watches these sanctions sluggishly begin to have an effect on Russia, they watch a country get leveled. The sanctions and all the unified efforts of NATO were too little too late. The result is an assault on Ukraine that is flattening the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not a fool. He appreciates the courage of his fellow Ukrainians. Nevertheless, he’s also watching as the Russian bombardment of his country lays waste to every inch. He has been backed into a corner. There are few choices remaining.

To save Ukraine, Zelenskyy must agree to stipulations that he would never have considered. Unfortunately, the western world must look in the mirror and realize their weak-kneed, haphazard response is to blame. A lot of big talk with little meaningful action.
