Jim Hagedorn represented Minnesota. He had been battling kidney cancer when it reemerged in July of last year. Just last month, he tested positive for COVID-19, around a time that the latest variant was moving quickly through the country. And his wife just sadly announced that he passed away at 59.

“Jim loved our country and loved representing the people of southern Minnesota,” Carnahan wrote. “Every moment of every day he lived his dream by serving others. There was no stronger conservative in our state than my husband; and it showed in how he voted, led and fought for our country.”
Minnesota’s Jim Hagedorn passed away this week at the age of 59. The Republican congressman had been elected to office in 2018. He was diagnosed with kidney cancer that same year. The cancer had returned in July of 2021. And he tested positive for COVID in January.
Hagedorn represented Minnesota’s 1st district, a mostly rural area very unlike Ilhan Omar’s Minneapolis-based district. He was remembered by his family and friends as a “loving husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, friend, brother-in-law, son-in-law, Vikings, Penguins and Twins fan.”
His death leaves his seat open. The fate of the seat could possibly be decided in a primary race later this year—followed by the general midterm election.
