After Speaker Pelosi Pulls 180, Refuses To Retire – CNN Pundit Orders Nancy To “Hang Up The Cleats”

Republicans are currently hoping for a “red wave” during the 2022 midterm elections. This would deliver the House back into their control, and they might also manage to flip the Senate as well.

It’s looking good for the GOP right now, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stands to lose dozens of Democrat allies to retirement or career changes. And most polls indicate America is leaning right.

However, Pelosi herself isn’t going anywhere—even though she’d hinted at retirement in 2021.

The Speaker announced this week that she plans to run for re-election, which flew in the face of many rumors that said Pelosi would step down. Right-wing voters were certainly hoping she would.

Interestingly, however, it seems at least a few liberals and Democrats had hoped she’d retire, too.

This includes the historically left-leaning CNN, which has often voiced support for Pelosi and her liberal policy ideas. Most assumed the network would applaud the Speaker’s decision to run again.

But not everyone who appears on CNN is applauding.

For example, Bakari Sellers went on CNN’s “The Lead” and said Pelosi absolutely should retire. In fact, he said he hopes Nancy “hangs up the cleats”:

I firmly believe that it’s time for new leadership in the House Democratic Caucus. I think it’s time for new leadership throughout the Democratic Party.

Not only do we have to get younger but more vibrant and have bigger and bolder ideas to bring in a new generation of voters.

Sellers did add that Pelosi “will go down in history as the greatest speaker of all time.” That being said, he also believes that it’s time for her to retire from being the leader of the party.

He also floated the possibility that Pelosi won’t always be Speaker — she might remain in office, but it could be in a non-leadership position.

Pelosi was House Minority Leader from 2003 to 2007 before becoming Speaker in 2007, where she was until 2011. Then she returned to that high-ranking spot in 2019.

Now she’s saying she’ll serve one more term, which doesn’t end until January 2023. This means she’ll be in place through the crucial midterm elections in the fall, when Democrats are the most vulnerable.

Republicans only need a net gain of 5 seats to flip the House to their favor, and most insiders and political experts are saying this will happen.

If it does, GOP leaders have already said they would try to remove Pelosi, regardless of whether or not she decides to finally retire in early 2023. Republicans view her as a major stumbling block.

Pelosi has been hit with plenty of criticism in recent years, and her support of far-left and even radical policies has made her very unpopular with Conservatives.

Democrat leaders in general appear concerned with what could happen if they lose power in Washington this year. And if a Republican President takes back the White House in 2024, that’d be a massive shift.

Perhaps Pelosi wants to stay long enough to fight that wave off. But right now, it seems very possible that she’ll either be ousted, or she’ll step down after the GOP has reclaimed control.

Key Takeaways:

  • CNN pundit Bakari Sellers says it’s time for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to “hang up the cleats.”
  • Sellers calls her the “greatest Speaker of all time,” but all leaders need to know when it’s time to retire.
  • Pelosi is facing a potentially giant red wave in the midterm elections, and GOP leaders say they’ll try to remove her if they regain the House majority.
