Sometimes the ones who are supposed to want you most are the first to walk away. That’s the ugly truth at the heart of a story out of Texas this week — one that begins with a routine pregnancy scan and ends with the full weight of the federal government stepping in to save a newborn boy.
McKenna West is a young woman from Alaska who signed up as a surrogate mother last September through Worldwide Surrogacy Specialists. Carry a child for a couple who wanted a family, earn some extra money, do something meaningful. For twenty weeks, everything went according to plan.
Then came the anatomy scan. Doctors diagnosed the baby with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a congenital condition in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. It sounds terrifying. But it’s treatable — a series of surgeries that have given thousands of children full lives. The biological parents, according to filings from the Texas Attorney General’s office, responded to the diagnosis by asking West to abort.
She said no.
What followed has now drawn in the Texas Attorney General, the Trump administration, Alliance Defending Freedom, and two major Dallas hospitals. West traveled to Texas, where AG Ken Paxton moved fast. He secured an emergency court order ensuring the baby — whom West named Gabriel — would receive life-saving care upon birth. Gabriel arrived Wednesday and was taken to a neonatal intensive care unit, with his first surgery expected within seven days.
The legal machinery didn’t stop at the state level. The Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services sent a pointed letter to Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and UT Southwestern Medical Center, making the federal government’s position unmistakable.

“In its letter, HHS’ civil rights office makes clear that federal law prohibits withholding medical treatment based on a person’s disability, including based on judgments that the life of someone with a disability has less value or that the individual would impose a burden on others. Those federal protections extend to decisions involving life-sustaining treatment, according to HHS.”
You don’t get to decide a child’s life isn’t worth saving because his heart isn’t perfect. HHS made clear it is monitoring Gabriel’s case and offering the hospitals technical assistance as they determine care.
According to Paxton’s filing, the biological parents refused to consent to heart surgery and may have been planning to fly Gabriel to California after birth — presumably to make decisions under a friendlier legal framework. Paxton shut that door. “Every child in our state deserves to be cared for and protected,” he said, “and that’s exactly what I’ll fight for.”
Meanwhile — and you really can’t make this up — NBC Nightly News ran a segment casting the biological parents as the victims. A couple allegedly tried to have a baby killed because of a treatable heart condition, and a major network decided they were the sympathetic characters. If you ever wondered where the mainstream media’s moral compass points, there’s your answer.
Here’s what gets me most. McKenna West didn’t set out to be anyone’s hero. She signed up to help a family. When that family decided their child was disposable, she became the only family he had. And now a court order prevents her from even seeing him — the only mother Gabriel has ever known. I don’t know how you square that with any definition of justice.
A story like this strips away the noise and leaves you with a simple question: do we believe every life has value, or don’t we? McKenna West answered that the only way a decent person can. Thank God the state of Texas and the Trump administration answered it the same way.
