FBI raids Soros-backed voter group’s Ohio HQ in fraud probe

FBI agents hit Ohio Organizing Collaborative headquarters

Federal investigators raided the headquarters of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative on June 11 and, according to reports, spread across the state to question people tied to the group. Some agents reportedly carried subpoenas, while others sought to seize electronic devices. That is not exactly the kind of house call that says, “Nothing to see here, folks.” Multiple sources later told CBS News that the operation was part of a fraud-related investigation. The Justice Department has not laid out the details, and a DOJ official told Fox News Digital that search warrants are approved by a judge and claims from media chatter are still just speculation until an indictment is filed.

The group is deeply tied to Democratic politics

OOC is a nonprofit that works closely with the Democratic Party in Ohio on voter mobilization and registration efforts. It is especially active in ballot campaigns and has leaned on a large donor network that includes the Soros family philanthropies. Recent tax records show the group took in more than $10 million in revenue in 2024, a hefty pile of cash for an outfit that likes to present itself as a humble civic helper. Among the money sources listed were the Soros family’s Foundation to Promote Open Society, New Venture Fund, Tides Foundation, and unions like the American Federation of Teachers and the Service Employees International Union. In other words, this was not a shoestring operation run out of a folding table and a coffee pot.

Big spending on Ohio fights raised the stakes

The organization has used that money to influence major Ohio battles. It spent $250,000 in 2023 to oppose a GOP-led effort to block abortion rights from being written into the state constitution, then spent another $300,000 the next year against a Republican redistricting effort. The Soros family’s funding trail is also significant: its Foundation to Promote Open Society gave OOC about $1.9 million between 2019 and 2020, while Open Society Action Fund gave $1 million to the group’s sister organization in 2021 and another $1 million in 2023. Conservatives have long warned that these networks are built to shape elections from the ground up, and this raid will only sharpen that debate.

OOC cries politics, but its past is not spotless

OOC says the federal scrutiny is proof the Trump administration is politicizing justice. Prentiss Haney, a board member authorized to speak for the group, told MS Now that the timing was meant to intimidate civil rights leaders and voters in the middle of a contested election season. But the group has baggage of its own. In 2017, a paid canvasser working with OOC pleaded guilty in a fraudulent voter registration operation. Republicans still have not produced conclusive proof of widespread voter fraud in recent election cycles, but that does not mean every claim of misconduct should be waved away with a smile and a press release. OOC did not respond to Fox News Digital when asked for comment.
