WATCH: Teen Arrested After Gunpoint Robbery of Kids’ Lemonade Stand

What police say happened in South Boston

Boston police say a 14-year-old boy was arrested after an armed robbery that targeted two children running a lemonade stand in broad daylight. The alleged crime happened on June 10 around 4:44 p.m. near West Ninth Street in South Boston, when two suspects reportedly approached the stand, asked whether the kids took Apple Pay, and then grabbed the cash box. According to police, one suspect also displayed what appeared to be a firearm before the pair took off. It is hard to call that anything but rotten behavior, especially when the victims were just trying to make a little summer money like good kids do.

The children faced the kind of scare no child should get

The victims were 12-year-old David Byrne and his 11-year-old sister, who were both shaken but stayed remarkably calm during the encounter. David said one suspect told him, “I might need to take the box,” then grabbed it with one hand and showed the gun. His sister reportedly put her hands up, and David told the suspect, “You can have it.” Their father, Dave, called the incident “outrageous” and said he was “pretty disgusted with it,” adding that the attack happened in the middle of broad daylight. That is the ugly reality here: even a lemonade stand is no longer off limits to criminals who think rules are for other people.

Arrest made, but one suspect is still out there

Detectives from District C-6 arrested the 14-year-old on June 12. Police say he is expected to face charges of Delinquent to wit Armed Robbery and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Investigators also say a second suspect seen in surveillance footage remains at large. Video released in connection with the case reportedly shows the pair making several passes by the stand before one of them appears to flash a black firearm from his waistband. That is not exactly the behavior of a misunderstood youngster who “just made a mistake.” It looks like a planned intimidation move against two children minding their own business.

Neighbors are angry, and they have every reason to be

The community has reportedly rallied around the children, with donations and visits to the lemonade stand after the robbery. Parents and residents have also used local forums to vent their anger about crime creeping deeper into everyday life. Some say they used to see police cruisers more often, while now officers seem stuck responding to one violent call after another. Others blame city leaders for backing away from proactive policing and favoring slogans over safety. When adults in charge make law-abiding families feel like they are on their own, bad actors notice, and neighborhoods pay the price.
