Republicans are increasingly concerned about the Biden administration’s relationship with China, which is becoming increasingly hostile. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel expressed these concerns on Fox News Sunday, saying that the administration is “so beholden to China” and that “China is running this White House in a lot of ways.”
McDaniel pointed to several examples of the administration’s close ties to China, including the sale of US Strategic Petroleum Reserves to the country and the administration’s praise of its energy and climate policies. She also noted the recent reports of a Chinese spy balloon that gathered data from multiple sensitive American military installations and the arrest of two people in New York for allegedly operating an illegal “police station” for the Chinese Communist Party.
These actions, according to McDaniel, are indicative of an administration that is more “China First” than “America First.” She argued that these actions have left voters “angst,” and that the Republican Party needs to come together to oppose Biden’s agenda.
However, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen recently called for a “constructive” and “healthy” relationship between the US and China, and expressed her belief that “China’s economic growth need not be incompatible with US economic leadership.” This has prompted criticism from Republicans, who argue that it is irresponsible for the US to foster a relationship with a country that is hostile to American interests.
Republicans are also concerned about the Biden administration’s lack of action in response to China’s increasing aggression, such as its military buildup in the South China Sea, its attempts to undermine democracy in Taiwan and its human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
In light of these concerns, many are calling for the Biden administration to be more aggressive in dealing with China and to take decisive action to protect American interests.
