Matt Gaetz Makes Announcement – Withdraws As Trump’s Attorney General Nominee

In the weeks since Donald Trump trounced their beloved Kamala Harris in the presidential election, Democrats have been in full meltdown mode. Heading into Election Day, they thought that there was no way that Trump could win.

Then their worst nightmare came true when Trump destroyed Harris not only in the Electoral College but also in the popular vote. On top of that, Republicans won both the Senate and the House, seemingly giving Trump full control over his Cabinet when it comes to confirmations.

Democrats lost their minds when Trump announced that he would be nominating Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as his attorney general. Conservatives everywhere, however, rejoiced at the nomination and relished the liberal panic that ensued.

That’s why it came as sad news on Thursday when Gaetz withdrew as Trump’s attorney general pick. This came after he was hit with multiple allegations of paying underage women for sex.

From X:
I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.

There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1. I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America.

Before resigning from Congress last week, Gaetz had been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee since 2021. The panel last subpoenaed Gaetz in September for an ongoing probe into alleged sexual misconduct with a minor. Gaetz fired back by saying that he would “no longer voluntarily participate” in their investigation.

Despite this, Gaetz still has the full support of his wife Ginger. After he withdrew as Trump’s attorney general pick, Ginger took to social media to honor him.

“The end of an era. No one loves America more than this guy,” she wrote of her husband.

Trump Responds

President-elect Trump responded to Gaetz’s withdrawal on Thursday afternoon.

“I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General,” the president-elect said. “He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect.”

“Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will,” Trump added.

This means that Trump will need to make a new pick for attorney general. One name on the shortlist is reportedly White House lawyer Mark Paoletta, who served during Trump’s first term as counsel to then-Vice President Mike Pence and to the Office of Management and Budget.

Another possible pick is Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, who was tapped in 2022 to be the state’s top prosecutor.  This came after then-state Attorney General Eric Schmitt was elected to the U.S. Senate.

Only time will tell who Trump’s attorney general will be!
