In a tragic turn of events on November 5, 2023, a 69-year-old man identified as Paul Kessler lost his life during a confrontation at a Pro-Israeli / Pro-Palestinian event at the intersection of Westlake Boulevard and Thousand Oaks Boulevard in the City of Thousand Oaks, California. The incident occurred around 3:20 PM, during a demonstration that addressed one of the most sensitive and contentious global issues.
Responding to multiple emergency calls, Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene to find Mr. Kessler suffering from a head injury. Witnesses present at the demonstration reported that Kessler was involved in a physical altercation with counter-protesters. Tragically, he fell backward and struck his head on the ground, leading to the need for immediate medical attention.
Kessler was subsequently transported to a local hospital for advanced medical treatment. Unfortunately, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he passed away on November 6, 2023. An autopsy conducted the same day by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the cause of death was a blunt force head injury, and the manner of death was classified as a homicide.
The authorities are actively investigating this incident, and it is of paramount importance to emphasize that this event appears to be an isolated occurrence rather than part of a larger organized effort. However, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has not ruled out the possibility that this may be categorized as a hate crime, reflecting the urgency to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice.
As the investigation unfolds, law enforcement is reaching out to the public for assistance in gathering more information about the incident. Anyone who witnessed the altercation or has any knowledge related to the events surrounding the tragedy is urged to contact Detective Stump at (805) 384-4745.
