Jeff Webb, a central figure in the development of modern competitive cheerleading, has died at the age of 76 following a fatal accident, according to statements from organizations he founded and individuals familiar with the incident.
Webb suffered a severe head injury after a fall while playing pickleball, according to an email from Varsity Spirit President Bill Seely cited by industry outlet Cheer Daily. He was hospitalized with significant trauma, and his family later made the decision to remove him from life support.
Varsity Spirit, the organization Webb built into a dominant force in cheerleading, confirmed his death in a public tribute. The company credited Webb with shaping the modern structure of the sport and fostering a community that spans generations of athletes and coaches. Varsity Brands, another entity he founded, also released a statement recognizing his long-term impact on the industry.
Webb’s influence on cheerleading extended across decades. He began as a yell leader at the University of Oklahoma and entered the field while still in high school. During his college years, he became involved with the National Cheerleaders Association, ultimately turning that experience into a full-time career rather than pursuing law school.
In 1974, Webb founded the Universal Cheerleaders Association, a program that would later become part of the Varsity Spirit network. Under his leadership, the organization expanded nationally and helped standardize competitive cheerleading, contributing to its evolution into a globally recognized sport.
His later work with the International Cheer Union played a role in securing full recognition from the International Olympic Committee in 2021.
Beyond athletics, Webb maintained connections in political circles and was described as a mentor to Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Following Kirk’s death, Webb publicly commented on his influence and legacy, reflecting his broader engagement outside the cheerleading industry.
