The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing a firestorm of criticism following their decision to reverse course and invite the anti–Catholic drag queen group “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” to their LGBTQ Pride Night event.
The scandal came about after the Dodgers initially chose to disinvite the drag queen troupe after Catholic groups denounced them for their anti–Catholic imagery and stance.
This prompted a strong reaction from Senator Marco Rubio (R–FL) who called out the Dodgers for promoting an “anti–Catholic” attitude by giving an award to the group.
“Do you believe that the Los Angeles Dodgers are being ‘inclusive and welcoming to everyone’ by giving an award to a group of gay and transgender drag performers that intentionally mocks and degrades Christians?” writing on Twitter.
In response to backlash from the LGBTQ community, the Dodgers issued a mea culpa and invited the drag queen group after all, saying they “asked the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to take their place on the field” and that the group had “agreed to receive the gratitude of our collective communities for the lifesaving work that they have done tirelessly for decades.”
Rubio was one of many who have decried the move, with many accusing the Dodgers of buckling under pressure from the LGBTQ movement and promoting anti–Catholic bigotry disguised as inclusivity.
“The weakest possible response. Long may your sales suffer. Enjoy your Anheuser–Busch treatment!” said Sour Patch Lyds.
“Disgraceful,” said Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon.
“You are cowards to cave to anti–Catholic neo–Marxist drag queens. You are thumbing your nose at all your Christian fans. Did you learn nothing from the Bud Light boycott?” said Liz Wheeler.
The Dodgers insistence on including the drag queen group has outraged many conservatives and traditional Catholics who believe that the team is using its platform to promote and celebrate values that run counter to their beliefs. Several Catholic groups, including the LA Archdiocese, have publicly stated their opposition to the move and called on the Dodgers to reverse their decision.
Only time will tell if the Dodgers‘ decision to include the controversial drag queen group in their festivities will have a lasting impact on their fanbase and reputation. For now, they have chosen to stand by their decision, which many have called an insult to Christians in the Los Angeles area and beyond.
