Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. has called on President Joe Biden to put an end to the escalating conflict between the United States and Russia in the wake of news that the Biden administration authorized the sale of controversial weapons, known as cluster munitions, to Ukraine.
Kennedy, the son of late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, took to Twitter on Saturday, where he urged Biden to “stop the ceaselesslation.” He also noted that White House press secretary Jen Psaki had previously called the use of cluster bombs a “war crime.”
“Biden was opposed to cluster bombs in 1982 as well, when he opposed their sale to Israel,” Kennedy wrote. “What happened to his esca conscience?”
The Biden administration confirmed this week that it will be sending cluster munitions to Ukraine as part of its latest aid package for the country.
Cluster bombs are explosives that release smaller explosives from multiple warheads, causing widespread damage across a wide area. More than 100 countries have banned cluster-type bombs due to the fact that they can kill or maim civilians, including in cases when unused bombs unexpectedly detonate years after they were dropped.
On Friday, White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan admitted that cluster-type bombs pose a risk to civilians, but maintained that the danger would be even greater without the weapons in a potential fight with Russia. Sullivan said that the cancellation rate for the munitions being sent to Ukraine is less than 3%.
Psaki also called out the use of cluster bombs back in February 2022, saying that it could “potentially be a war crime.” Kennedy was one of several Democrats in the House to voice opposition to Biden’s decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine, including Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., and Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif.
“It is – it would be. I don’t have any confirmation of that. We have seen the reports. If that were true, it would potentially be a war crime,” Psaki responded at the time.
Despite his opposition to Biden’s decision, Kennedy is still considered a long shot in his race against the current president, who enjoys overwhelming support from within the Democratic Party. Recent polls have shown Kennedy garnering double-digit support among likely Democratic voters.
Last year, WH Press Secretary Jen Psaki called the use of cluster bombs a “war crime.” Now President Biden plans to send them to Ukraine. Stop the ceaseless escalation! It is time for peace. #Kennedy24https://t.co/W1uXkQY4dW
