I voted last month for the primaries. I was asked for my photo ID and my voter’s registration card. I presented them both. I did not feel oppressed or discriminated against because they wanted my ID. I didn’t think the woman was racist. She wanted to verify that I was who my registration said I was. OK.
There is a lie being told in this country right now about voting rights and the lie is that requiring a photo ID in order to vote is racist. That it keeps people from being able to vote. To this date I have not seen one person interviewed on local or national news, on the liberal or conservative media that has been kept from voting because it required a photo ID. I have actually not seen anyone presented that could not vote that was legally allowed to and wanted to. That person has not been interviewed on anything I am watching. Does that person exist? I’m beginning to think he does not.
For many years I volunteered at a food pantry. Besides food other services were offered, medical, dental, clothing, AND help getting a FREE photo ID from the state. We walked a person through the whole application process. And you needed a photo ID to benefit from the other services offered than food. And you need a photo ID to get into some of the homeless shelters in our city. You need one to apply for food stamps. You need a photo ID to do most banking transactions. I have to show mine when I go to the doctor. Yet somehow none of those places are being oppressive or racist when they ask you for your ID. Hmmm.
So what is going on here. Fear. Fear is what is going on. Liberals, progressives (progress ??) are trying to make citizens scared that their rights are being trampled on, forfeited somehow. This one thing, showing an ID to vote is the ONE THING that is going to stop someone from voting. And I guess only blacks are affected by this whole thing?
Meanwhile, in this city there was a huge scandal a few years ago that a candidate for a county office sent his relatives into every precinct to vote multiple times for him. So voter fraud does happen. I can’t imagine that candidate is the only person in our country to do that. And “well-meaning” friends and family do go into nursing homes and “help” the elderly vote. I’ve seen that myself.
When my mother died and I cleaned out her stuff I found my grandfather’s poll tax receipts. You were charged to vote. Now THAT was oppressive and racist. In 1964 poll taxes were made illegal for federal elections. They were banned for state elections in 1966.
“In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed and the Twenty-fourth Amendment, abolishing poll taxes for voting for federal offices, was ratified, and the following year Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson called for the implementation of comprehensive federal legislation to protect voting rights. The resulting act, the Voting Rights Act, suspended literacy tests, provided for federal approval of proposed changes to voting laws or procedures (“preclearance”) in jurisdictions that had previously used tests to determine voter eligibility (these areas were covered under Sections 4 and 5 of the legislation), and directed the attorney general of the United States to challenge the use of poll taxes for state and local elections.” (Britannica)
Since 1964 everyone in this country could vote. And there were no more poll taxes.
The way a bully operates is to make a person afraid, of the bully, of being found out, of recriminations if things aren’t done right. And what is happening in our country today is bullying. Pure and simple. Except the consequences will be tragic and damaging. The bullies are making some citizens afraid that there is going to be injustice for them, that there will be recriminations if they don’t act out and get the right people in charge. We are being bullied into believing lies about things that are not happening now and will not happen even if we all have to show a photo ID to vote.
All of this bullying, all of these lies, are part of a plan to change our whole form of government. And if we believe the lies, if we allow ourselves to continue to be bullied we will end up with these people making all our decisions for us. Because they think they know better than us. Spread the truth, speak up and vote against the lies.
