Florida Springs Mouse-Trap on Disney – The Senate Just Passed Bill to Strip the Mouse House’s Special Carveout
What’s Happening:
Boy, don’t get on Gov. DeSantis’s bad side. He seems to be one of only a few politicians who actually put Americans ahead of big corporations.
Disney went after his state after they passed a law that protected children. It seems that the big, Hollywood company thought it could tell how Florida could govern itself.
DeSantis and his legislature struck back, hard. Disney could lose big time.
From Fox News:
The Florida Senate approved a bill Wednesday that dissolves special self-governing status given to Disney over 50 years ago after the company publicly feuds with Republicans over a controversial parental rights bill.
The Republican controlled chamber passed the bill, by a margin of 23–16, that would dissolve special status granted to the company that essentially allows Disney to self-govern on its large property near Orlando.
Way back in 1967, Florida passed a bill that gave Disney special self-governing powers over a region in Orange and Osceola counties.
This was because the counties themselves did not have the resources needed to bring Disney’s project to life. So, in exchange for Disney investing money to develop what is now called “Disney World,” it essentially is a government in of itself.
That might have been all well and good, over 50 years ago. But times have changed. Disney is no longer in the business of creating wholesome, family-friendly entertainment.
Its top executives are making it a priority to push LGBT characters and content through all of its channels. The company has even gone to war with Florida over the Parental Rights Bill.
This is pretty significant. Rarely do we see even Republicans passing laws that jeopardize the interests of a massive corporation. Most politicians would fear the blowback this kind of move would cause.
But clearly, DeSantis cares more about the people of Florida, than a California-based company openly trying to push its woke agenda.
If this bill is signed into law, it would revoke Disney’s control over that region. What would that mean? For starters, Florida would be able to tax Disney much more.
It might mean new laws and requirements over what Disney does in the state. Would Disney leave Florida over this?
UPDATE: The House just passed the bill, so it’s on the way to Governor DeSantis’s desk.
Key Takeaways:
- The Florida Senate voted to revoke Disney’s self-governing powers.
- Disney was given special control over a region back in 1967.
- This comes as the liberal company attacks Florida’s recent Parental Rights Bill.
