Curtis Puts the Question to Grassley
Senator John Curtis of Utah has asked Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. The request came after ProPublica reported that Trump Jr.’s wedding to Bettina Anderson was heavily funded by a secret benefactor described as a Russian oligarch close to President Vladimir Putin. In the same letter, Curtis also asked the committee to subpoena Hunter Biden over his business dealings involving Ukraine and China. Curtis is pressing the committee to examine both matters and argues that oversight should not depend on party. His request is for congressional scrutiny, not a conclusion that either man violated the law.
The Report Behind the Request
ProPublica identified the alleged benefactor as Umar Kremlev and described him as a Russian oligarch close to Putin. Curtis highlighted the report with a pointed comparison: a toaster is a wedding gift, but a private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else. That line gives the dispute its sharpest edge. Curtis argues that the reported arrangement deserves more than a polite request for everyone to simply trust the people involved. His letter focuses on whether the committee should seek answers about the reported funding and apply the same level of attention to claims involving powerful families on both sides of the political aisle.
Curtis Calls for One Standard
In his letter, Curtis said Americans deserve confidence that public institutions serve them rather than presidents, political parties, wealthy interests, or members of powerful families. He argued that Congress has an obligation to pursue credible concerns wherever they lead and without regard to party. Curtis also pointed to Republican investigations into Hunter Biden’s foreign relationships, saying Republicans nearly wore out the subpoena machine. His message was simple: the machine should not be unplugged now. Curtis said the phrase “trust us” was not enough then, and it is not enough now. That standard may be uncomfortable for politicians, but it is not exactly a radical request from a committee with subpoena power.
Grassley Says the Process Will Take Time
Grassley did not say that he would subpoena Donald Trump Jr. or set a hearing date. Speaking to Punchbowl News, he said the matter takes time and that he could not answer when a hearing might happen. Grassley added that he would take Curtis’s request seriously, sit down with staff, and see what the committee could do. That leaves open the possibility of calling Trump Jr. to testify, but it offers no guarantee that a subpoena or hearing will follow. For now, Grassley has said only that he will review the request with staff; any next step remains unsettled.
