A middle school football game in Tennessee came to an abrupt end Tuesday night after a 16-year-old girl jumped a fence, ran onto the field and tackled a player during a confrontation between the two teams.
The teenager is now facing assault and disorderly conduct charges, while school and athletic officials have imposed separate penalties barring her from future events.
The incident happened as South Middle School played Cornersville Middle School at Franklin County High School, where South Middle holds its home games, according to WSMV-TV.
By that point, the game itself was decidedly one-sided. South Middle had taken a 35-0 lead after scoring a touchdown and converting the extra point.
Then the trouble started.
Players from the two teams began scuffling on the field. Officials responded by throwing penalty flags and separating those involved. With the initial confrontation apparently under control, players began heading back toward their respective huddles.
That was when the 16-year-old entered the picture.

Video of the incident showed the girl jumping over a fence and running onto the playing field. She went directly toward the South Middle player who had been involved in the earlier scuffle and tackled him to the ground.
It did not end with the first hit.
As the player attempted to get back up, the girl knocked him down a second time and then stood over him.
Adults quickly intervened to stop the confrontation. Officials subsequently decided there would be no more football that night and ended the game early.
The teenager headed toward the Cornersville sideline, where school resource officers met her. Her parents were at the game, and authorities initially allowed her to leave with them.
The legal consequences arrived the following day.
Put her on the defensive line because that tackle had zero hesitation.

On Wednesday, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office charged the girl with assault and disorderly conduct. Her name has not been publicly released.
The incident also resulted in significant penalties from school and athletic officials.
Franklin County Schools banned the teenager for life from all district properties. That punishment extends well beyond the football field where Tuesday night’s confrontation occurred.
The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association imposed its own sanction, banning her from attending Cornersville Middle School athletic events for one year.
The girl attends school in the Marshall County Schools district. Director of Schools Justin Perry said the district would cooperate with the agencies investigating what happened.
“We are deeply disappointed by the incident and remain committed to player, staff, and fan safety and a high level of sportsmanship,” Perry said in a statement.
