CNN commentator Scott Jennings unloaded on Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff after the Georgia senator made a rally remark involving President Donald Trump and White House aide Natalie Harp, accusing Ossoff of dragging a relatively unknown staffer into the political crossfire to score points against the president.
Jennings argued that Ossoff was “punching down” by targeting Harp, Trump’s 34-year-old executive assistant, rather than simply directing his criticism at Trump.
The controversy began with comments Ossoff made over the weekend while criticizing Trump’s priorities amid the ongoing war with Iran and its economic effects on Americans.
According to video of the rally, Ossoff said Trump wanted to golf, build a ballroom and travel with Harp.
The reference to Harp quickly attracted attention, with Jennings arguing that the remark carried an unmistakable insinuation about the nature of her relationship with Trump.

Harp works closely with the president and is involved in maintaining Trump’s Truth Social presence and other social media accounts, according to USA Today. She previously worked on Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and was an on-air personality at One America News Network.
Jennings went after Ossoff during a Tuesday night CNN appearance, arguing that Harp was being used as a political target despite not being an elected official or household name.
“He didn’t attack the president. He took an unknown presidential aide. She’s not elected to anything. She’s not a household name. She’s not a public figure,” Jennings said.
“And he basically communicated that the only reason she has her job in the White House is because, hey, that’s what Republican women are good for, right? Wink, wink. That’s how they get their jobs in politics. I think he’s a disgusting coward.”
CNN host Laura Coates interrupted to distinguish Jennings’ interpretation from Ossoff’s actual words.
“He didn’t say that specifically, to be clear. But your intimation is what you think happened. Go ahead,” Coates said.
Ossoff: It’s been amazing to watch this White House melt down over this all week. And about Natalie Harp, these White House staffers are adults, public officials paid by the taxpayer, with immense power in positions of public trust. Jennings stood by his interpretation, pointing to the audience’s reaction to Ossoff’s remark.
“Well, if you’re arguing that he could have had any other possible meeting, meaning I don’t — I don’t know how you would conclude anything other. You heard the crowd. They were in there clapping like seals,” he responded.
Jennings then turned his criticism toward Democrats more broadly, accusing them of failing to defend Harp despite the party’s frequent emphasis on women’s rights and advancement.
“Now, the party of women likes to tell us that, you know, we’re here for women’s rights and we’re going to promote women,” Jennings said.
“And then you’ve got one of their leading candidates for president out dragging an unknown woman who’s gone off to serve her government through the mud, insinuating that the only possible reason she could have a job in politics is because she’s a concubine for a politician. It’s disgusting.”
Ossoff has defended his criticism of Harp on different grounds.

During an appearance on MS Now Wednesday, the senator argued that Harp occupies an influential government position and compared her status to other senior administration officials, including Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and senior counselor for trade Peter Navarro.
Ossoff said Harp has “immense power” and occupies a position of public trust. He also accused her of putting out Trump’s “daily dose of delusion and flattery” through social media.
That explanation did not satisfy Jennings.
He returned to the controversy Wednesday on social media, writing, “Democrats pummeling a defenseless working American woman to hurt Trump and further their own ambitions. And people are actually defending it and cheering them on. Unbelievable.”
In an accompanying podcast clip, Jennings again accused Ossoff of using Harp as a convenient target.
“She’s going to work every day, and you have Ossoff punching down on her, willingly destroying her reputation because he thinks it might score some points on social media today among these crazy liberal Democrat voters, who sit in these arenas and they clap like seals,” Jennings said.
