Prosecutors Focus on Patrice Comey’s Omitted Text
Federal prosecutors are now pointing to a new detail in the James Comey seashell case, and it is not exactly helping the former FBI director’s beach-walk story. According to Paul Sperry, a new court filing suggests Patrice Comey deliberately misled investigators by leaving out that she texted her husband a possible alibi just two minutes before he posted the “86” message involving President Donald Trump. Sperry reported that the text was a Google screenshot showing a more harmless definition of “86.” Federal investigators reportedly learned about the omission through search warrants used to obtain iCloud data and Google search history tied to the Comeys. For a couple that says this was all just an innocent stroll on the sand, that timing is the sort of thing even Washington lawyers cannot easily bury under a beach towel.

The Shells Were Reportedly Not in an Obvious Spot
Prosecutors are also challenging Comey’s claim that he simply stumbled upon the “86 47” seashell formation while walking with his wife on a North Carolina beach. Sperry reported that, in new court papers, federal prosecutors argued “there is reason to doubt” Comey’s version because the shells were located behind a sand dune in a spot beachgoers could not easily discover. That does not prove who placed the shells there, but it does raise a fair question: how convenient does a “random” political message have to be before someone in law enforcement starts asking whether it was really random at all? Comey, of all people, knows that investigators tend to notice details like location, timing, and prior communications. Funny how those little details matter when the microscope points the other direction.

Comey’s Post and the Felony Counts
Comey posted the “86 47” Instagram image in May 2025 with the caption, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.” The phrase “86 47” has been described by critics and prosecutors as a threat to eliminate or kill the 47th president. Comey later said he took the post down after learning some people associate the numbers with violence, saying, “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.” Earlier this year, a grand jury from the Eastern District of North Carolina indicted Comey on two felony counts, according to the source article: knowingly and willfully making a threat to take the life of and inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, and transmitting in interstate and foreign commerce a communication containing a threat to kill President Donald J. Trump.
Comey’s Explanation Put Patrice in the Middle
Comey later gave a fuller explanation of the beach scene, saying he and Patrice were walking back toward the road when they saw shells arranged as numbers in the sand. According to Comey, Patrice asked why someone would put an address in the sand, and he said he thought it was some kind of political message. Comey then said Patrice, who had worked in restaurants, explained that “86” meant removing an item from a menu when ingredients ran out, while he said that as a kid it meant leaving or ditching a place. He said Patrice told him it was clever and that he should take a picture, so he did and posted it. In the video shared by Collin Rugg, Comey portrayed himself as being under fire “for walking on the beach with my wife,” while insisting the idea that it was a call for assassination was “crazy.”
