They were supposed to vet a candidate first. That was the plan. Instead, they rushed to pick a new face after the last one imploded. Maine Democrats are moving fast to anoint Troy Jackson as their Senate nominee despite serious new allegations. The party expects to elevate him at a convention in Bangor this Saturday. They claim this is how democracy works. I call it a rush to judgment.
Troy Jackson won most of the voting delegates chosen last weekend across Maine’s 16 counties. His top rivals dropped out and backed him just days ago. Jackson is a former state Senate president and a fifth-generation logger.
He used to be a conservative Republican before switching parties over twenty years ago. He quickly raised over $1 million for his campaign. But reports from this past week dug into his alleged temper and bad workplace conduct. Other reports dug into claims of mortgage improprieties regarding Jackson. Some in the party worry they have landed another unvetted nominee.
According to Fox News Politics, the Maine Democratic State Committee formally selected Jackson as the replacement nominee. Not a single Maine Democrat had cast a vote for Jackson to be their nominee in that race. Devon Murphy-Anderson, the Executive Director, claimed the move was an example of “democracy” working exactly as it should.
She stated: “Democracy, while sometimes really messy, is always, always worth fighting for…doing what is right is what us Maine Democrats will choose every damn time.” Critics pointed out similarities between Jackson’s rapid ascent and the vote-free installation of Kamala Harris as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee.
The rush is on, but the questions remain. They call it democracy. It looks more like a backroom deal. This is not about winning an election; it is about ignoring the truth to save face. You deserve better than a candidate chosen in the dark. You deserve a leader who has been checked, not just pushed. The voters in Maine deserve to know the full story before they head to the polls. Do not let them tell you this is normal. It is not.
