Anonymous Claims Recent Hack into Russia That Could Cripple Them

When Russia invaded Ukraine, the discussion about cyber-crime escalated almost immediately. Most people appreciate that Russia has some of the most notorious hackers in the world. Russian-based internet crooks have hacked into a number of intricate high-tech networks.

There was an instant fear that devastating cyberattacks would be used as part of Vladimir Putin’s war strategy. As western nations implemented sanctions against Russia, the warnings increased. However, there are hackers out there who believe what Russia is doing is wrong.

One of those is the notorious “Anonymous”. These self-proclaimed “activist hackers” have perpetrated some serious breaches of internet security. To conceal their identity, members of the group wear an iconic mask in public. The Guy Fawkes mask is also the group’s icon.

It’s a white mask that’s a nifty representation of Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot. The group attempted to blow up the House of Lords in 1605. Anonymous professes to have the capability to essentially “blow up” anything or anyone on the internet.

They’ve done a pretty commendable job of hitting every one of their targets. The Anonymous hacktivists have hit major governments, including the United States and Israel. They’ve devastated child pornography sites and certain copyright protection agencies.

Major corporations have been a frequent target of Anonymous. They’ve hacked into PayPal, MasterCard, and Visa. There doesn’t seem to be a method of cybersecurity that can stop them. The Central Bank of Russia wasn’t able to.

One of the group’s Twitter accounts shared the hack. The post had the smiling Fawkes mask, plus the words, “JUST IN: The #Anonymous collective has hacked the Central Bank of Russia. More than 35,000 files will be released within 48 hours with secret agreements. #OpRussia.”

Anonymous claims that the files they secured in the hack will prove “secret agreements.” There have been reports that central bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina wanted to resign. However, apparently, Vladimir Putin refused to allow it.

Experts believe her request is fueled by the reality of the situation. Under the wave of sanctions Russia is experiencing, no financial executive could operate normally. This attack makes things worse. Anonymous is threatening to release these secret files within the next 24 hours.

Depending on what they contain, the information could be devastating to Putin’s control of Russia’s financial stability. The Ukrainian army and private citizens, as well, are standing strong against a powerful Russian army. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pleading for more help.

Many countries appear reluctant to provide what is necessary. Leaders like the United States’ Joe Biden almost seem afraid of Putin. However, one cyber group isn’t. Anonymously or not, Ukraine would benefit from others acting courageously and standing up against a tyrant.
