A quiet ride on Atlanta’s MARTA rail system turned into a nightmare Saturday when a 66-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in what authorities are describing as a random and unprovoked attack.
The victim, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as Margaret Swan, was riding a train traveling between the Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations when the attack occurred. According to MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher, investigators have found no indication that Swan knew her alleged attacker.
“This appears to be a senseless act of violence, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” MARTA said in a statement following the tragedy.
Authorities arrested 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews shortly after the attack. He has been charged with malice murder in connection with Swan’s death.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the stabbing. At approximately 11:21 a.m., Swan was seated alone inside a train car. Just before 11:25 a.m., Matthews allegedly entered the car and moved toward the area where she was sitting.
Investigators say the footage shows Matthews standing near Swan before approaching her directly. Nineteen seconds later, according to the warrant, he allegedly pulled out a knife, opened it, and attacked her.
Reports indicate the assault was particularly brutal. According to 11Alive, Swan suffered between 18 and 20 stab wounds. The warrant states that she screamed for help as the attack unfolded, but the violence continued.
Authorities allege that Matthews threw Swan to the floor during the assault and remained near her until the train reached Oakland City Station less than two minutes later.
When the train stopped, investigators say Matthews exited while still holding the knife. Law enforcement officers who had been dispatched to the scene quickly took him into custody.
Emergency medical personnel rushed to provide lifesaving treatment, but Swan was pronounced dead at the scene.
While investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Swan’s death, authorities have indicated that the attack appears to have been random, making the case all the more disturbing for regular riders.
