Omar pushes back as pressure builds
Rep. Ilhan Omar is trying to shut down the growing pile of questions about Minnesota’s massive Feeding Our Future fraud case, and she is pointing the finger right back at the Trump administration. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Omar said, “Any claim that I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false.” She added that the MEALS Act was signed by President Trump and backed by both parties, and she argued that the federal framework for the program came from Trump’s USDA team. That is a bold defense, but it does not erase the simple fact that millions in taxpayer money vanished while fraudsters were living high on the hog.
The committee says Omar ignored calls to testify
The Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee had invited Omar to testify about what she knew, but lawmakers say she never responded. That led to an effort to subpoena records, though Democrats on the committee blocked it. Republican chair Rep. Kristin Robbins says Omar is now rewriting history after the fact, claiming she only sent a letter once the fraud was exposed. Robbins says Omar had already pushed to keep the waivers in place before the scheme was uncovered, which, if true, is a pretty inconvenient detail for her version of events. The committee’s final report also took aim at Gov. Tim Walz’s administration, saying it helped create a “culture of tolerance” that let fraud grow unchecked.
Critics say the guardrails were removed
The report argued that Omar’s MEALS Act weakened safeguards by letting for-profit restaurants join the program and by allowing “grab-and-go” meals that made it harder to verify whether children were actually being fed. Republicans say those changes opened the door wider than a Minnesota barn in July, and the fraudsters rushed right through it. The USDA also weighed in, saying Minnesota officials had warnings and complaints for months but failed to stop the scheme. According to the department, federal rules did not force anyone to ignore fraud, and blaming Washington after the mess was exposed does not excuse the state’s inaction while taxpayers were fleeced for hundreds of millions of dollars meant to feed hungry children.
