You probably wouldn’t expect a heroic water rescue and a bizarre shooting to be part of the same story. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what recently happened in South Carolina. The incident started when a pair of jet skiers ran into problems.
A 74-year-old man was boating with his wife on the same lake. They noticed the two distressed jet skiers and immediately motored towards them to help. The boater, whose name is being withheld, rescued both a man and a woman from the water.
Apparently, after dragging them aboard, the male jet skier became belligerent. Nathan Drew Morgan, the male jet skier, apparently assaulted both the boater and his wife. According to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Department, his partner shoved him back into the lake.
The two boaters and the female jet skier pulled Morgan back onboard. However, he continued to act irrationally, starting to assault his rescuers again. This is where the story turns totally bizarre. The 74-year-old man was in fear for both his and his wife’s lives.
As the second encounter escalated, the man pulled out a gun and shot Morgan. The sheriff’s report says the victim of the shooting died on the pontoon boat. FOX News investigators report that the man and woman jet skier were actually the two involved in an argument.
Morgan is believed to have been heavily intoxicated. So, you’re probably waiting with anticipation to find out how this story ends. It would be a difficult pill to swallow if you rescued someone from the water and then faced a homicide charge for having to shoot them.
Thankfully, that’s not how this tragedy ends. The case was handed over to the 10th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. However, after a thorough investigation and consultation with detectives, the solicitor chose not to file charges.
The 10th Circuit Solicitor, David Wagner, ruled in self-defense. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is asking for prayers for the deceased. Morgan’s obituary insisted that he was a peaceful man. While bizarre, this was a tragedy uncharacteristic of his true personality.
